Position Summary:
This is a full time year round position with occasional, required overtime. The university Access Control Technician has general knowledge about card access, electronic lock, hinge hardware, general software programing, and performs basic trouble shooting and repairs on the university door access system. The technician also repairs and installs mechanical locks, panic hardware, door closers/openers, and miscellaneous door hardware. The technician pins, repairs, and adjusts lock cores and cuts and marks keys for all campus facilities. The individual in this position is assigned tasks and works independently, but works in collaboration with Security and Facilities Services staff members as needed. The technician is an active member of the Puget Sound community and serves as a promoter of a welcoming and inclusive culture. The technician may be assigned other mission related tasks as necessary.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Interact professionally with faculty, staff, and students while performing assigned work.
  • Communicate and work effectively with other university departments as needed.
  • Coordinate repairs with constituents to minimize disruption.
  • Perform initial trouble shooting and general repair on electronic locks and related components.
  • Repair and maintain electronic door openers and devices.
  • Repair/replace locks and keys and related hardware on campus.
  • Troubleshoot problems and provide viable solutions.
  • Surveys buildings and develops re-key schedules as assigned.
  • Install and repair lock, panic hardware, closures and all door hardware.
  • Install lock cores and cut keys for all locks on campus.
  • Complete repair orders to support the campus community.
  • Respond to occasional after-hours emergency repair calls.
  • Pick locks and safes and changes combinations upon request.
  • Work/coordinate with security operations to maintain key and access control records.
  • Develop and maintains locks and hardware preventive maintenance program, and keeps associated records.
  • Meet with vendors and contractors to provide technical assistance and ensure university standards are met.
  • Maintain professional appearance and dress consistent with industry and safety standards.
  • Regular, predictable attendance, including department meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities
    This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    Budget Responsibilities
    No budgetary responsibilities. All staff must be fiscally responsible by caring for issued department equipment.

    Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years' related work experience demonstrating ability to perform electronic access and locksmith tasks and use tools, including computers, associated with the trade; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to adapt rapidly to a changing workday with minimal delay.
  • Locksmith training to include hardware installation, service and repair.
  • Direct knowledge of Best Lock keying system.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team setting.
  • Must have the ability to think and plan ahead.
  • Must be able to legally and safely operate university vehicles.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate information freely with co-workers, supervisors and clients.
  • Commitment to delivering quality customer service to all constituents.
  • Must have the ability to interact seamlessly with university department and all other constituent groups.
  • Ability to effectively use hand & power tools, key cutting equipment, automatic key cutting equipment, lock picking tool, lock boring jigs, hinge template guides, etc.
  • Must have knowledge of and practices appropriate safety techniques, Material
  • Safety Data sheets and fall protection guidelines.
  • Must handle confidential and sensitive university information
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to work overhead with both hands simultaneously.
  • Ability to climb, stand, and work on a ladder for an extended period.
  • Must have dexterity, coordination, and corrected vision to perform tedious and precision tasks.
  • Must pass pre-employment testing (physical exam to include a drug screen, criminal background check, and functional assessment.)
  • Must be able to speak clearly, listen attentively, read, write, and understand English.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.
