Primary Function:

Position Focus: Under the direction of an Assistant Director of Residential Life, the Area Coordinator is full-time administrator of student development who oversees the ongoing operations of multiple residence halls in a designated area housing between 1200 and 2000 students. This is a live-on position with a university provided apartment that involves a level of accessibility and accountability to all students and staff and includes setting priorities and management of situations and emergencies that may occur at any time of day or night. This position including breaks during the university academic calendar also provides supervision of the residential organizational structure in the area including graduate residence hall director(s), full-time hall director(s), and indirect supervision of a Community Advisor staff of 60-80.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally):

Competence Area: Social Justice and Diversity. Create and coordinate cultural competence training for the department of Housing and Residential Services. Develop and lead diversity and inclusion programming efforts for all residential students. Works with cultural centers to support the identities of diverse student population. Liaise with Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Conversations on Diversity and Equity program.

Responsible for directing multiple residence halls in a designated area including training, developing, supervising, and evaluating all staff members who are a part of an Area Team that includes Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Hall Directors, and Office Support Specialists. Recruit, select, and train a team of 60 to 80 Community Advisors and 60 to 80 Desk Assistants.

Aid in the development and implementation of the Residential Curriculum. Formulates and recommends policy and program evaluation processes to be in line with best practices and the Residential Curriculum. Routes students to appropriate academic resources, advising, and counseling students through the use of the Navigate system. Uses self-authorship and critical race theories to promote co-curricular learning and development through multicultural competence, career development, community engagement, and personal growth and development. Recommends and implements changes based on the evaluations. Resolves any existing program problems.

Acts on behalf of the university to make critical decisions, and respond to crisis situations to support students, staff, and assure preservation of university assets. Will consult and collaborate with other university professionals as deemed appropriate. Participates in a campus-wide on-call duty rotation with the Management Team. Responds to emergency and crisis situations, including on-site management and upward communication protocols. Follows-up on pertinent matters. Responsible for the administrative, developmental, and facilities management of residential complexes housing between 1200 and 2000 students. Maintains appropriate records and communicates effectively with Office Support Specialist to maintain housing occupancy and key management. Works with the Work Request Office to follow up on facilities concerns.

Responsible for implementing the departmental mission, and all policies and procedures of the department and the university. Establishes and maintains regularly scheduled office hours. Schedules, assigns, and reviews work within the residential area. Collaborates with other staff within the complex and across Housing and Residential Services to make decisions and to ensure consistency and sharing of best practices.

Serves as a campus Adjudicator for Student Conduct Process. Serve as a Campus Security Authority and assist with the process of reporting crimes to maintain accurate and timely crime statistics and increase the overall safety of the campus.
Assists with summer conference operations and other summer projects as assigned.Actively participates in professional staff development sessions.

Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Residential Life.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position:

1. A master’s degree in counseling, student personnel, or a related academic area is required.

2. Three or more years of successful, full-time post master’s residence hall experience and a demonstrated commitment to diversity are essential.

3. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, the desire to work as part of a team and offer innovative approaches to problem solving.

Education and Experience Preferred:

1. Experience with supervision, selection, training and development of residence hall staff

2. Ability to effectively respond to crisis, manage fiscal resources and adjudicate University Policy violations.

3. Previous supervision of graduate students is preferred

Working Hours:

M-F 8-4:30

Minimum Pay Rate (Hourly or Monthly):

$3500 per month

Actual hiring rate is commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity; position includes a robust benefits package to eligible applicants.
