About the Department:

Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) provides non-credit programs to the general public by providing seminars, conferences, and certificate programs through the McKimmon Conference and Training Center and the Office of Professional Development, along with two units in Eastern North Carolina, The Collaborative and the Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council.

Essential Job Duties:

The Director of Continuing and Professional Education leads and manages several program units charged with developing and growing market-driven and strategic continuing and professional education opportunities in North Carolina and beyond. The selected individual will join the organization at a time of reinvention and great opportunity when NC State University is focused more than ever on supporting students throughout their professional lives.

The director will be charged with:

  • Identifying, building, and increasing new partnerships with academic colleges, faculty, and subject-matter experts to develop cutting-edge content largely in the non-credit programming arena;
  • Seeking strategic partnerships with companies and organizations;
  • Providing outstanding and ethical financial management of several program units that are largely supported by program revenues;
  • Leading and working with staff to design and deliver programming that is offered in face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats, where the most current instructional technologies and digital learning techniques are incorporated;
  • Identifying opportunities in emerging markets by utilizing primary and secondary research techniques; and
  • Providing an entrepreneurial and growth mindset and instilling that mindset and approach with employees.

The individual shall demonstrate leadership in program and curriculum development based on the results of market research and strategic opportunities; ensure customer satisfaction that current clientele’s needs are met, redirecting organizational focus and goals when necessary; and maintain an active schedule of impact assessments.

In addition, the director will pursue partnerships with business and industry, professional organizations, government agencies, and other educational institutions, as appropriate, to design and deliver customized, self-supporting education and training programs.

The director will provide administrative leadership for strategic unit planning, staff development, obtaining sponsored support, and maintaining the fiscal integrity and financial solvency of the units as well as maintaining strong mutually supportive relationships with clientele. The position provides management and fiscal responsibilities for Customized Training and Development, McKimmon Conference and Training Center, the Office of Professional Development, Print Services, The Collaborative, and the Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council, which together currently employ 22 permanent SHRA staff members and eight temporary workers. The overall operational budget, generated almost exclusively from registrant and user fees, is $5 million, with the combined units serving 220,000+ participants on an annual basis.

Other Responsibilities:

Stimulate the greater coordination and control of CPE marketing efforts to enhance return-on-investment for various marketing initiatives to the three employees of the Marketing, Promotions, and Communications Office. It is crucial in a self-supporting financial environment to make the public more aware of available programs and services in order to secure a consistent level of enrollment.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • The candidate should be a highly motivated professional with dynamic leadership experience developing high-quality, self-sustaining, non-credit educational opportunities;
  • Ability to demonstrate that he/she has successfully established public and private partnerships to assess, develop, and deliver customized, self-supporting, educational programs for business, industry, government, and professional groups;
  • At least ten years of progressively responsible program development and administrative experience which includes utilizing effective learning formats and instructional technologies to deliver courses, assess outcomes, and work effectively with diverse constituent groups;
  • Understand and apply appropriate marketing, promotions, and communications to improve operational efficiency and increase overall effectiveness in generating the necessary revenue flow;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to utilize people skills to effectively lead and to motivate staff to deliver high-quality customer service on a daily basis;
  • Ability to model behavior of engagement by attending, networking, and participating in events through the University Professional and Continuing Education Association and other relevant professional organizations;
  • Ability to converse effectively regarding programmatic/budget topics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding oral and written communication skills, proven organizational skills, as well as the ability to interact with both internal and external constituents.
  • Ability travel overnight and the ability to work nights and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree (or higher) in related fields preferred.
