About the Department:

Agriculture in today’s world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products.

ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, and PhD degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) at North Carolina State University is seeking a dedicated educator for a full-time 100% teaching position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor. This nine-month, non-tenure-track position is a recurring fixed-term position with benefits, with an expectation of contract renewal conditional on demonstrated effectiveness in primary responsibilities. The position carries a teaching load of three courses each semester (six courses in an academic year) in the Baccalaureate Degree Program in Agricultural Business Management and the Minor Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program.

This position is an academic (9-month) year position. The successful candidate will actively engage students in learning, teaching a mix of primarily agribusiness marketing (4P), agribusiness management, agricultural finance, and related topics. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate student advising, serve as a coach of student competition teams (e.g., in NAMA, AAEA, SAEA competitions), and serve as a liaison between these teams and relevant professional associations. The person filling this position will have the opportunity to work closely with other faculty in related and complementary teaching, extension, and applied research programs. Opportunities for summer employment (distance-education teaching as an example) and grant collaborations are possible.

The position of Assistant Teaching Professor is accorded professional rank with an initial appointment for one year and the opportunity of renewal for longer periods subject to performance. In addition, there is an opportunity for promotion to a higher rank with demonstrated success in teaching, research, and service. Research in this realm includes publishing in the Agribusiness area and can include research complementary with teaching responsibilities such as research focused on business and economics teaching methods.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • PhD in agricultural economics, economics, business, finance, or marketing.
  • ABD candidates who are very close to completion of their dissertations will be considered at the Instructor rank.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching is imperative, and candidates should address their ability to actively engage students based on pedagogical best-practices.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing, and the skill to be an effective teacher in the classroom or other public forums in order to convey understanding.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous employment in marketing and management, and familiarity with the agricultural sector.
