The Office of Medical Education (OME) with the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine (SOM) is searching for an Assistant LIC Director for the Salud Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC). Candidates must be able to be obtain a faculty appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and applicants must be a board-certified physician or advanced practice provider with an MD, DO, PA, or NP degree from an accredited University.  This is an at‐will position and will be available at up to a 0.3 FTE equivalent. This position could expand in the future if additional students are able to be hosted at Salud Denver-metro clinic sites. Positions will be named as soon as an appropriate candidate(s) is identified; however, funding for these positions may begin as soon as September 1, 2021 in accordance with the roll-out of the SOM-OME curriculum reform. 

A longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) was created based on three foundational characteristics of an effective, core clinical educational environment:

(1) Student participation in comprehensive care of patients over time

(2) Presence of a continuous, learning relationship with those patients' clinicians

(3) Meeting a majority of core clinical competencies in an ongoing, continuous fashion through those experiences

The School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education is transitioning the core clinical curriculum into an LIC model, as part of a larger scale full curriculum overhaul. Core clinical education will occur in a longitudinal, integrated fashion primarily in an outpatient setting, with targeted hospital-based training called immersions placed during the core clinical year. Core competencies will be taught encompassing care of adults, children, and pregnant patients taught by providers representing the disciplines of family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, surgery and emergency medicine. In the Salud LIC, students will be placed at Denver-metro Salud clinic sites as their primary site of learning, to be taught a majority of the core competencies by providers practicing full scope family-centered care.

The Salud Assistant LIC Director will work alongside the Salud LIC Director to design, implement and continuously improve the Salud LIC Program.

This position falls under the leadership of Office of Medical Education in the Dean’s Office of the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU SOM) and reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Medical Education, Director of the Clinical Curriculum.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and develop faculty preceptors and team members at the Salud LIC sites who desire to teach LIC students
  • Oversee faculty preceptors in the Salud LIC through designing and implementing a faculty development program for LIC preceptors with support from Salud LIC Director and UC SOM
  • Partner with clinic-appointed representatives and Salud LIC Coordinator to establish a recurring weekly schedule for all LIC students at their assigned LIC clinic site and additional training sites in surgery and psychiatry (and establish a norm of flexibility, as students adjust their schedule in order to continuously follow patients)
  • Partner with UCH inpatient specialty liaisons (for majority of Salud LIC students) and appropriate inpatient stakeholders in Longmont (for Longmont LIC student) to develop protocols and systems to facilitate student involvement in longitudinal care of patients who are admitted for inpatient treatment and follow up in specialty care areas.
  • Closely monitor student progress toward achievement of entrustable professional activities (EPAs) and identify when a student is not developing as expected, to bring in prompt additional support
  • Coach, support and mentor all Salud LIC students in the yearly cohort as needed regarding their learning and development as a physician, their profession-specific identity formation, and any other issues related to their success as a student (as appropriate). Note that formal review meetings shall occur with the Salud LIC Director
  • Implementation of a regular assessment program for students that shall including direct observation, identification of students who need support, collaboration regarding remediation plans for specific students, gathering of assessments and feedback from all supervisors working with students, creating summary reports of student progress, and participation in grading meetings as needed (to be shared with Salud LIC Director as needed)
  • Monitor and develop appropriate interventions to ensure LIC students are achieving competency and comparability in all required clinical conditions, competencies, and objectives as directed by the Clinical Content Directors  
  • Implement the core clinical content didactic curriculum, with supervision and partnership from the Salud LIC Director, clinical content directors and liaisons as appropriate, including integrated basic science and health and society curriculum. The curriculum will be developed centrally by the SOM-OME; the, responsibility will be in scheduling speakers, ensuring quality and comparability, and adding content as desired unique to the Salud setting.
  • Facilitate/teach specialty specific didactic sessions (exact expectation to be determined with initial year of program development)
  • Assist with the other impromptu LIC program administration needs at the sites as needed
  • Attend LIC Director meetings as needed, coordinated with Salud LIC Director
  • Support the Salud LIC Director in preparation and follow up related to quarterly meetings with each student to review progress and feedback, develop individualized learning goals, support career exploration, and provide individualized advising
  • Engage in continuous quality improvement measures of the Salud LIC, informed by course evaluation
  • Expected to be involved in direct student teaching as an LIC preceptor
Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at:

Assistant Professor- $10,000 to $60,000- FTE: 0.1 - 0.3 FTE (salary support plus benefits, up to the NIH salary cap of $200,000).

Associate Professor- $10,000 to $60,000- FTE: 0.1 - 0.3 FTE (salary support plus benefits, up to the NIH salary cap of $200,000).

Professor- $10,000 to $60,000- FTE: 0.1 - 0.3 FTE (salary support plus benefits, up to the NIH salary cap of $200,000).

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
