JOB SUMMARY: This position provides customer service and administrative support for library operations.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Provide knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful customer service to faculty, staff, students and the general public at the service desk; use the integrated library system to check books/materials out and in; help patrons locate specific circulating books or reserve items; collect fines and fees; and add or update patron records in the library system. Issue library cards to community patrons and patrons from other schools; explain circulation policies and procedures to patrons.
  • Open and close the library during specified hours, and secure library equipment.
  • Sort and shelve library materials and assist with shelf maintenance as needed.
  • Assist in the maintenance and/or troubleshooting of library equipment: including telephones, copiers, scanners, printers, computer software, etc.
    Does one or all of the following :
  • Processes faculty/staff material order request forms; researches, orders, receives and processes items.
  • Processes faculty reserve requests; scans and uploads electronic reserve materials.
  • Processes interlibrary loan requests from internal and external customers.
  • Enters cataloging information into computerized database.
  • Gathers statistical data and collates it into a report.
  • Maintains library accounts with vendors.
  • Checks in periodicals.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Major duties of a Library Assistant I vary widely depending on the size of the campus where the position is located. At smaller campuses a library assistant performs all of these duties. At larger campuses library assistants may specialize to perform some of the major duties exclusively.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of library operations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in providing quality customer services.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include university and library policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of related customer services and administrative duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide administrative and customer service support for library operations. Success in this position results in the provision of quality library services to college students, faculty and staff.

CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, faculty, staff, students, community patrons, representatives of other libraries, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: May assist with training and supervising student workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION:

  • Non-exempt
  • Pay grade: 10
