Job Description Summary

The Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) leads the development of a vision and effective strategy to create a culture for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), and the development and implementation of proactive initiatives that will underpin every aspect of the Museum’s new strategic plan.

The CDO is a senior-level management position reporting directly to the Williams Director and serving as a member of the Museum’s Executive Team. The CDO champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive environment, working with the Penn Museum Diversity Committee, of which they will be the leading member, across institutional initiatives related to people and programs. The CDO will collaborate with Museum stakeholders to assess potential barriers and develop strategies to recruit and retain a diverse workforce. The CDO will also collaborate with Museum stakeholders to assess the need for, and recommend training initiatives on, cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of equity and inclusion values, and maintaining compliance with University policy.

The CDO will work closely with the Executive team, Penn’s central HR team, and all department leaders in the Museum to integrate DEIA into all people activities and programs. The CDO will consult on the design, implementation, and facilitation of DEI education and training programs, talent acquisition initiatives, and performance assessment efforts that support professional development opportunities and reduce bias. The person in this role will challenge existing and planned programs and exhibitions to ensure an inclusive, equitable, and fully accessible employee and visitor experience.

Working with Museum staff already engaged in community relations, the CDO will recruit and lead the Penn Museum Community Advisory Board and coordinate Museum-wide efforts to ensure that gallery and programmatic offerings are created in community-centric partnership. The CDO will promote the Museum’s commitment to a climate of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility to the community, organizations, and agencies, and will collaborate with external and internal constituency groups including the Museum’s Board of Advisors, the broader Penn community and the surrounding communities.

The person in this role will provide strategic and practical leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of a proactive and positive work culture. The CDO will provide open, transparent communication and partnership across the Museum’s departments and leadership teams to support a culture of accountability, service, inclusion, equity, and high performance. Working with Penn’s central HR team, Penn’s Office of Government and Community Affairs, Penn’s Chief Diversity Officer, the Penn Museum Diversity Committee and hiring managers in the Museum, lead efforts to establish a pipeline of diverse talent through enhanced sourcing, onboarding, learning and development, succession, and retention programs. The CDO will manage the development, sourcing, and execution of crucial professional development offerings for the Museum’s staff to encourage professional growth, succession planning, engagement, and competitiveness in the market. This person will manage the revitalization of the Museum’s active role in providing paid internships for high school and college students in the region, and will also work with those Museum staff who work with student groups to help to ensure that a culture for DEIA is advanced. The CDO will provide support for the Museum’s many talented and committed volunteers and look to build a larger, more diverse, and more resilient volunteer pool, collaborating with Museum staff who are already engaged in these efforts.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of the Executive Team and partner with the Williams Director and the Executive Team to drive innovative strategies that will integrate DEIA initiatives into the business and culture of the Penn Museum. Actively oversee, support, and align business-driven DEIA programs and activities across the Museum. Champion continuous improvement and alignment with the Museum’s mission and foster an environment of accountability through clear goal setting and results measurement.
  • Identify learning needs and lead education efforts across the Museum related to bias awareness, anti-racism, cultural sensitivity, and inclusion, among other topics they identify. Provide leadership on the design and delivery of Museum-wide DEIA and cultural competency training programs. Prepare budget plans and maintain fiscal responsibility for the DEIA function. This may include assistance with grant proposals.
  • Lead cultural change and promote the Museum’s commitment to a culture of DEIA through interaction with employees at all levels of the organization. Use feedback to develop strategies for improvement and provide leadership to address challenges and remove obstacles.
  • Use data and supporting analytic tools to define and prioritize the strategy, inform decisions, and measure results. Lead benchmarking analysis to make recommendations on trends in both the industry and the community. Ensure appropriate use of information both internally and externally; appropriately balance the need for transparency and privacy.
  • Working with staff already engaged with building community relations, form and cultivate the Penn Museum Community Advisory Board, facilitate relationships with individuals and organizations outside of the Museum to help further the Museum’s DEIA agenda. Work to ensure that the Museum is represented at community events and plan and host internal and public DEIA events.
  • Consult with Marketing and Communications on ensuring DEIA approaches to marketing opportunities and developing regular and consistent internal communication strategies and content management on the websites and social media.
  • Provide strategic and practical leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of a proactive and positive work culture. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Masters degree preferred or equivalent; diversity-related training preferred
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience focused on diversity and inclusion and human resources management in a professional environment
  • Museum or cultural/educational institution experience preferred
  • Experience articulating the importance of equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion and understanding of best practices that affect organizational change required, as well as demonstrated success in advancing these efforts in an organization.
  • Capacity to build trust and establish rapport as both a leader and colleague, and an ability to facilitate conversations and to provide and receive feedback
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at listening and responding with empathy in a diverse environment, building consensus, and managing conflict
  • Broad understanding of current issues facing museums and cultural institutions
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with a wide range of audiences on complex issues
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations related to discrimination and equal opportunity
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with comfort working independently and collaboratively
  • 3+ years of experience supervising and mentoring direct reports preferred
  • Experience working with community advisors/stakeholders preferred
