Job Description:

The Laboratory Technician II is primary responsible for performing laboratory procedures, conducting studies aimed at understanding disease pathogenesis and discovery of novel therapies for lysosomal storage diseases. This includes characterization of animal models, exploring candidate signaling pathways, and disease biomarkers and validation of candidate compounds from high-throughput screens (by using primary cells from different patients and animal models). Because of the nature of this work, schedule flexibility, ability to work independently, self-motivation and self-reliance are expected. This position works under the general supervision of the Genetics Research faculty. This position is located at the UF Main Campus in Gainesville but funded by UF-COM, Jacksonville.

  • Reviews research procedures and their impact on research goals. Performs scientific experiments for analysis and standardization, including troubleshooting. Maintains laboratory notebook.
  • Evaluates data generated and prepares the statistical analysis.
  • Prepares and presents reports of research methods and findings. Reviews literature pertinent to the research area.
  • Orders consumables for research use. Catalogs a database of research equipment, consumables, animal models, constructs and cell lines.
  • Assists PI with determining most suitable technology for given experiments.
  • Provides general care/routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Orients and trains students and other trainees on laboratory techniques and general lab duties.
Expected Salary:

$15 to $20 per hour depending on education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Associate's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of related experience or a high school diploma and four years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fluorescence microscopy (including confocal microscopy), immunohistochemistry, tandem spectroscopy, liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
  • Tissue/cell culture techniques.
  • Molecular biology techniques, such as molecular cloning, transfection, DNA and RNA isolation.
  • Protein techniques including enzyme kinetics, subcellular fractionation, immuno-precipitation, immunoblotting, pulse-chase assays.
  • Murine models, including breeding, behavioral assessments, drug administration, and post-mortem dissection, perfusion and histology.
  • Basic knowledge of software packages such as Microsoft Word Power Point, and Excel, Graph Pad, PubChem, Fiji (Image J), PDB, Volocity and microscope software ZEN.
  • Familiarity with concepts of parametric and non-parametric statistics.
