Position Summary

San Diego State University Imperial Valley Campus is an integral division of SDSU located in Calexico and Brawley, 120 miles east of the San Diego Campus. SDSU IV is administered by the Dean of the Campus, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Students, the Director for Business and Financial Services, and the Director of Development and P3 Initiatives. SDSU IV offers undergraduate education, credential programs for teacher preparation, and various Master’s of Arts programs. There are approximately 1,000 students enrolled each semester. SDSU-IV provides a uniquely intimate educational experience. Due to our proximity to the Mexican border, our campus serves a diverse student body comprised largely of groups that are historically underrepresented in higher education. Given our regional focus, responsive curriculum, and community engagement, the IV Campus has become a powerful engine of economic growth for the region.

The primary mission of Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) is to provide services to students and the university community that support and enhance the education of the whole person, as well as nurture a healthy and productive learning-centered campus environment. All C&PS services are provided and designed to promote academic excellence and retention at SDSU. Counseling & Psychological Services provides, either directly or through collaboration and referral, a variety of counseling services, (e.g., individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, short-term psychotherapy), assessment and evaluation, faculty and staff consultation, and professional training/supervision, consistent with the educational mission of the university. C&PS services are conceived and implemented within the context of a systemic, community-based approach. The SDSU learning community is richly diverse. A crucial part of C&PS’s ability to work effectively on campus is each individual staff members’ demonstrable respect for diversity and ability to effectively work from a cross-cultural perspective with people from a wide range of backgrounds and value systems.

The Clinical/Counseling Therapist is responsible for the provision of the following: The full range of individual and group psychological services to students from a wide range of multicultural backgrounds presenting complex psychosocial, social, personal, and family problems; crisis/suicide intervention and trauma response/debriefing; consultation, prevention education, and training services to individuals (e.g., students, faculty, staff, parents, administrators), campus groups (e.g., student clubs, residence hall communities, fraternities, sororities) and organizational units (e.g., Associated Students, University College's Academic Departments, Student Affairs Offices).

This is a full-time academic year (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before May 31, 2022, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

A doctorate in behavioral sciences, counseling, psychology, or a related academic field, or a California license as a Psychologist, Marriage & Family Therapist or Clinical Social Worker. Candidates must have experience and clinical effectiveness with multicultural counseling approaches with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience and clinical effectiveness with multicultural counseling approaches and outreach with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities and other traditionally underrepresented student
• Crisis intervention and trauma response debriefing capabilities
• clinical skills and experience with short-term therapy approaches
• Significant knowledge of and experience making discerning judgments regarding complex ethical and legal issues
• Previous university counseling center experience is highly desirable.

Counseling/Clinical Skills

• Knowledge of and ability to work effectively with students from multi-cultural backgrounds presenting various attitudes and value systems and; to assume full responsibilities for counseling of individuals presenting any and all types of complex psychological, social, and personal problems.
• Ability to independently handle cases from the initial contact and assessment to the final problem resolution. Knowledge of the full range of complex legal and ethical issues that relate to counseling/clinical work including a working knowledge of statutes and codes regarding a counselors “duty to warn,” child/elder abuse reporting, confidentiality, and involuntary confinement procedures.
• Ability to plan and conduct classes utilizing innovative teaching techniques and design curriculum related to counseling and psychological services.

Case Management Skills

• Ability to conduct necessary and appropriate treatment planning, use psychodiagnostic instruments, record case notes, and consult effectively with other professionals.
• Ability to prepare and present oral and written reports that are clear, concise, and comprehensive.
• Ability to furnish, individually and in small groups, responsible and responsive professional opinions to other staff about a variety of complex cases.
• Ability to establish effective working collaborations between individuals and groups representing different cultures, interest groups, and/or departments.

Research/Writing/and Program Evaluation Skills (If assigned work in this area.)

• Ability to conduct/participate in research leading toward contributions to the development of the Behavioral Sciences.
• Ability to publish and/or make effective presentations at professional conferences.
• Ability to conduct program evaluation research and use the data to consult with faculty/staff and/or administrators regarding student needs, trends, and needed modifications of campus programs and curriculum.

Specialized Skills

• Candidate must have demonstrable respect for diversity and an ability to effectively work from a multicultural perspective with people from a wide range of backgrounds and value systems.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

Candidates must possess a California license or be license-eligible to practice Psychology in California, (license must be obtained within 18 months of date of hire), or possess a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist or Clinical Social Worker.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $5,435 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
