Position Summary

San Diego State University Imperial Valley Campus is an integral division of SDSU located in Calexico and Brawley, 120 miles east of the San Diego Campus. SDSU IV is administered by the Dean of the Campus, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the  Dean of Students, the Director for Business and Financial Services, and the Director of Development and P3 Initiatives. SDSU IV offers undergraduate education, credential programs for teacher preparation, and various Master’s of Arts programs. There are approximately 1,000 students enrolled each semester. SDSU-IV provides a uniquely intimate educational experience. Due to our proximity to the Mexican border, our campus serves a diverse student body comprised largely of groups that are historically underrepresented in higher education. Given our regional focus, responsive curriculum, and community engagement, the IV Campus has become a powerful engine of economic growth for the region.

In collaboration with, and under the direction of, the Dean of Students, provides support to the Cross Cultural Center. The coordinator of the Cross-Cultural Center helps with innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed towards improving students from diverse populations outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall student experience. The coordinator helps support student assistants, programs, and events in the Center, and oversees Cross Cultural Center operations, including, but not limited to, processing administrative paperwork, developing student assistants’ work schedules, ordering supplies, answering phones, managing email and the website. This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to diverse students at SDSU Imperial Valley. This position may serve as a mentor advisor to students and will work to design and deliver programs for students, staff, and faculty to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. This position will promote the SDSU IV Cross-Cultural Center and raise awareness of diverse student excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials and through representation on campus committees

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, temporary position expected to end on or before 9/30/2022. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

License/Certification Required

California Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Prior experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse student populations
  • Competency in cross-cultural communication
  • Possesses leadership qualities such as: strong team player, proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity, and creativity
  • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice

Specialized Skills

  • Minimum of one year experience advising students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters
  • Bilingual: English-Spanish
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.
  • Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and crosscultural needs of ethnically and culturally diverse students.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact diverse student communities
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to controversial, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations
  • Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities.
  • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and support students for work in the Center and for advocacy work on campus.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications and Google applications

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,304 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
