Position Type:

Administrative Appointment

Classification Title:

Dean, Library

Position's Functional Title:

Dean, Library

Position Summary:

Governors State University seeks a visionary, collaborative leader to serve as the Dean of the Library. The Dean is the chief administrator of the University Library and reports directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The position is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced library administrator to lead the library faculty and staff, serve the students and faculty, and advance the mission and vision of one of Illinois’ public comprehensive universities.

The Dean of the Library is a 12-month administrative position with responsibility for the organization, administration, operation, and evaluations of university library services, physical facilities, faculty, staff, collections and budget. The Dean mentors librarians who are part of the university’s unionized tenure-stream faculty, and supports their work with faculty colleagues across campus. Working with faculty and staff, the Dean enables the University Library to support the institutional mission by developing the library’s collections and services, supporting research and scholarship, engaging emergent technologies, and promoting and advocating for library programs that address the needs of students, staff, faculty, and the community.

The Dean serves on the Deans Council. Convened by the Provost, the Council considers a broad array of areas including strategic initiatives, institutional effectiveness, budgeting, curricular and administrative issues, academic policies and college/Academic Affairs initiatives aimed at enhancing both faculty and student life on campus. As one of the administrators in Academic Affairs, the Dean provides leadership and contributes to academic and student services in close collaboration with Information Technology Services, Digital Learning and Media Design, and the Writing Center.

Outside of the University, the Dean works closely with other Illinois public university deans as well as representing the Library in the community and region, and at the state and national levels.

Governors State University (GSU) was founded in 1969, originally as an upper-division institution with a primary focus of serving community college graduates pursuing baccalaureate degrees. During the five intervening decades, GSU has grown to become the only regional, public, comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area, serving approximately 6,000 students annually in 85 different bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs. GSU provides accessible, high value undergraduate and graduate education to culturally and economically diverse students from across the region and around the world. From its mission statement, Governors State University is committed to offering an exceptional and accessible education that prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in a global society.

Students benefit from the university’s high academic quality, range of convenient class times, increasing hybrid and online offerings, and outstanding educational value.

The exceptionally beautiful campus is conveniently located within easy reach by road and rail to Chicago and surrounding communities that have a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. The highly diverse region GSU serves has a number of high performing schools and engaged communities as well as struggling urban, suburban, and rural communities. GSU seeks to serve as a public square, working to foster educational opportunities for
all populations.
