The College of Arts and Sciences has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Manager, Advising to work in Coral Gables, FL.

This position leads an advising unit within Student Academic Services and is responsible for the supervision of a team of Sr. Academic Advisors. This unit, under the Manager’s leadership, provides a wide range of programmatic and academic advising services to students in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Advising and Support of Undergraduate Students

  • Responsible for communicating with and advising members of the College student population from acceptance to graduation who need assistance beyond that of the Sr. Advisor.
  • Responsible for supporting the Sr. Academic Advisors with their designated populations as needed.
  • Responds to all academic alerts within assigned student population and assures team members respond appropriately. Provides students with resources, makes appropriate referrals, and maintains follow up to ensure resolution.
  • Ensures Sr. Academic Advisor team and the unit as a whole meet retention and graduation metrics of the undergraduate A&S population assigned.
  • Provides guidance on major/career exploration, degree requirements, study abroad, as well as University policies, procedures, and resources. Makes referrals and liaises with other area Managers as needed.
  • Maintains academic integrity and confidentiality when corresponding with students, parents, and officials. Adheres to strict student confidentiality in accordance to FERPA.

Leadership and Supervision

  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates all peer and full-time professional Sr. Advisors within the assigned unit.
  • Manages all customer service needs for area students/visitors. Conducts evaluation of advising services and revision to meet student needs.
  • Attends and participates in all Department of Student Academic Services meetings.
  • Ensures unit remains current with academic requirements and curriculum changes by regularly reviewing the Bulletin. Ensures unit attends advising workshops and professional conferences.

Programming

  • Along with Sr. Advisor team and other area Managers, plans and implements retention and belonging programs for designated student population such as Coffee Chats, Major Mixers, Career Exploration, and Study Skills workshops.
  • Develops and coordinates regular broad and targeted career programming to support placement rates of College graduates such as pre-health and research workshops.
  • Attends other College and University events as assigned.

Academic Records and Technical Support

  • Proficient in the functions of all Student Enrollment Management Systems to assist students in completing registration functions and ensuring that unit meets required retention and graduation metrics.
  • Participates in the process of secure record keeping for students to include correspondence, registration forms, academic progress posting, grades, alerts, and confidential/official academic documents. Maintains academic integrity and confidentiality when corresponding by email to students, parents, and officials.
  • Processes documents including course directives, transfer equivalencies and transient status approval for students including those registering to participate in studies through the University of Miami Study Abroad Program or other institutions.

Professional Development:

  • Remains current with academic requirements and curriculum changes by regularly reviewing the Bulletin. Attends advising workshops and professional conferences.
  • Collaborates with other colleges/schools at the University of Miami on matters pertaining to inter-transferring students’ academic records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
