The mission of the Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS) is to create a positive freshman-year experience for students by helping them:

(1) successfully transition into the college
(2) feel part of the college community
(3) develop academic success strategies
(4) understand their chosen profession
(5) learn to use some of the tools and techniques of their profession.

OSDS also helps students develop professional skills and prepares them to successfully transition into the workplace upon graduation by providing a variety of experiential learning and leadership opportunities, engaging employers both in and out of the classroom, and establishing networks with alumni.

Description of Work:

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte recognizes the differentiation of mission, goals, and objectives inherent in the diversity of disciplines represented by its colleges and departments. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching (including lab, studio, or production management) may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Professor of Practice leads the teaching team and teaches the introductory engineering and engineering technology courses; provides accurate and timely career exploration and academic advising; participates in recruiting events and summer orientation and registration; leads the Leadership Academy and supports student academic and professional development programs such as the residential Freshman Learning Community, MAPS retention program, Engage ME, WE Engage and Senior Design; participates in activities designed to engage alumni and employers; and assists in writing proposals for external funding.

The Professor of Practice is knowledgeable of general education and academic program requirements, progression policies, SACS and ABET accreditation requirements, and university regulations. They must stay abreast of all curriculum revisions and changes in policies and procedures. They must work with other freshman advisors, the College of Engineering Undergraduate Administrative Council, and other campus partners. The Professor of Practice also helps address retention issues specific to academically at-risk student populations, especially underrepresented minorities, females, transfer students, and non-traditional students.

Each year the Professor of Practice helps assess, evaluate, and continuously improve student learning, advising, academic support programs, and other aspects of the freshman year experience using data, lessons learned, and input from key stakeholders.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

Candidates should have a Master of Science degree in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management, or an engineering-related degree. Preference will be given to candidates with at least 20 years of professional work experience in an engineering-related position and who are registered professional engineers. Candidates with a BS degree in an engineering-related field may also be considered based on significant years of practice, leadership experience, and/or professional registration.

Candidates must be able to work independently and with a diverse team; demonstrate excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills; and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment that serves a diverse student population and faculty alumni, and employers. As such, candidates must be able to create an inclusive environment that facilitates student learning and development.

Necessary Licenses/Certifications:

Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or other professional certification is desired not but required
