Job Description:


Budget Title: Staff Assistant (SL-2)


Salary: up to $27,500 (Part-time 50%)


The successful candidate will assist the Assistant Dean, Academic Diversity & Inclusive Excellence with overseeing the Watson College Scholars Program within the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University. The Program Coordinator plans and coordinates the day-to-day operational, programmatic, administrative, and fiscal activities. The Watson College Scholars Program is a donor-sponsored program that supports access to higher education for underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Serves as a central point of contact between students, faculty, staff, other departments, and/or external constituencies on day-to-day programmatic, operational, and administrative matters; assists with seminars, meetings, special projects, and/or general problem resolution
  • Coordinates activities of support staff, consultants, faculty, and/or volunteers engaged in implementation and administration of program objectives
  • Provides specialized administrative support in the development, implementation, and marketing of the program
  • Monitors and administers program/project revenues and expenses
  • Writes, edits, and coordinates development of, promotional materials, educational materials, training manuals, newsletters, and/or brochures, as appropriate
  • Maintains program/project records, researches information and gathers and analyzes data; prepares special and/or one-time reports, summaries, or replies to inquiries, selecting relevant data from a variety of sources
  • Performs or delegates clerical and administrative support tasks, including creation, typing, and editing of program correspondence, purchasing documents, reports, program handbooks, and other publications
  • May assist with grant and/or proposal writing as appropriate to the objectives and funding nature of the program; may participate in other fundraising activities.
  • May perform specialized activities of a programmatic nature in direct support of the accomplishment of program objectives and protocol


Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience making administrative decisions and judgments, organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data, assess and report on program outcomes
  • Ability to effectively plan, and organize meetings, activities and/or special events.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office
  • Advanced writing and editorial skills
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and cost control procedures, communication principles, media and marketing techniques
  • Proven advocate for students who are from a diverse background, effectively counsel and advise students
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and team environment
  • Available to work evening and weekend hours
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally
  • Ability to work independently, manage several projects and priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred:


  • Knowledge of academic setting, engineering and computer science workforce
  • Two years of experience serving diverse student populations that includes budget administration, program management and evaluation

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
