Ux/Graphic Designer, Center for Information and Communication Studies

Regular, Full-time - Salary - MR08

We are looking for a driven UX/graphic designer with a passion for learning, who takes pride in crafting highly usable, intuitive web experiences that meet client and user goals.

The UX/Graphic Designer will contribute to the visual tone and implementation of design for the College of Communication and Information (CCI) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT) which includes design for publications, websites, and other digital initiatives that support the College.  This role will additionally oversee management and development of the UT User eXperience Lab (UXL) which provides the expertise and tools to ensure that users’ needs are at the forefront of development and design.  As such, the UX/Graphic Designer will engage in how people interact with technology by coordinating UX services that provide guidance on what can be done to improve those interactions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and support various CCI digital initiatives, including marketing, communications, document templates, infographics, and data visualization
  • Provide web support and management to CCI websites to reduce complexity and create simple, delightful experiences for our users.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and departments concerning web site layout and presentation to ensure the website reflects each School vision, mission, and values
  • Implement accessibility best practices and University standards and branding
  • Coordinate activities in the UXL around conducting qualitative and quantitative user research studies using a variety of research methods in the lab, remotely, and in the field.
  • Maintain UXL equipment
  • Manage UXL user schedules
  • Provide tours of the UXL for visitors, current students, and future students
  • Facilitate client meetings, workshops, and other collaborative working sessions
  • Collaborate and interact with CICS team activities
  • Learning expectations
  • Gain expertise on UXL equipment to provide training for faculty, staff, and students
  • Build and nurture partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Facilitate internal process development efforts
  • Support business development efforts with documentation, scoping, and pitching
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative user research studies using a variety of research methods in the lab, remotely, and in the field

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic/Web design, visual design, human-centered design (HCD), Information Sciences, or a related area. 
  • Excellent foundational skills in core design and practices such as layout, color theory, typography
  • A solid understanding of and commitment to web standards, including web accessibility standards and user experience principles
  • Demonstrates experience conceptualizing, creating and executing design solutions based on unique needs of specific users.
  • Understands Human Centered Design process and best practices
  • Familiarity with working within brand guidelines and requirements.
  • Strong proficiency in industry standard design software 
  • Experience developing for WordPress
  • Ability to compile information into report form
  • Ability to learn UX research tools
  • Excellent communication skills, including the use of information and communication technologies and web-based collaborative tools
  • Ability to successfully work independently, but also follow direction and collaborate on projects.
