EFFECTIVE DATE               Screening of applicants’ credentials will begin on October 15, 2021, and continue until the position is filled.



Salary is commensurate with training and experience. Benefits include group hospitalization and life insurance, State Employees Retirement; Workers’ Compensation; sick and annual leave; numerous University of Tennessee and state benefits programs, including liberal time off for holidays and longevity pay after three years of service; reimbursement for official travel. Funding is available to support this position for 2-years and will be revisited based on productivity and revenue generated from the fee-based programs developed.



The Department of Plant Sciences is seeking an individual to plan, implement, and deliver fee-based programs specific to horticulture, particularly lawn care and ornamental landscapes. The specialist is expected to develop (and support) research-based certification and training programs to be deployed online and via traditional formats for stakeholders across Tennessee. A successful applicant is also expected to provide technical support for synchronous and asynchronous regional and statewide events targeted towards stakeholders in horticulture.

This full-time position can be based in East, Middle or West Tennessee. The candidate's work station can be flexible (combination of in-person and remote) with the expectation that the individual will remain in regular and frequent contact with horticulture specialists working in the lawn care and ornamental landscape industry.


  • Develop, deliver, and administer fee-based, online certification/training programs for the turfgrass industry, particularly home lawn care.
  • Collaborate with the state Extension Master Gardener coordinator, other state specialists, and county agents on planning, development, implementation and evaluation of Extension Master Gardener and ornamental landscape educational materials, as well as both in-person and distance trainings.
  • Support statewide Extension Master Gardener website efforts, video development, and management of social media platforms for Extension Master Gardener and residential and consumer horticulture outreach, including database support.


  • Earned M.S. degree (or higher) in a discipline relevant to this position.
  • Experience using online learning and information delivery platforms (i.e., Canvas, Zoom, WebEx), as well as YouTube and social media.
  • Ability to capture and edit video, audio, and graphical content used to train stakeholders through digital media.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with UTK Office of Information Technology (OIT) to optimize digital training programs.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based file sharing and storage platforms including OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.
  • Willingness and ability to become familiar with new technologies for online training and program delivery as they develop.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and evidence of strong skills in building, supporting, and working in teams.

  • Working knowledge of horticulture industry, particularly lawn care and ornamental landscapes.
  • Experience in instructional design and content creation for digital platforms.
  • Two years experience working in horticulture.
  • Evidence of the ability to collaborate with diverse audiences including faculty, stakeholders, and other clientele.
