The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for a Visiting User Experience (UX) Designer in the Smart, Healthy Communities Initiative Office. The UX Designer will work on design projects for new apps to be built on the Rokwire platform for our new Smart Campus Strategy Lab (StratLab). We are seeking someone with a commitment to engaging in human-centered design approaches with a relentless drive to create the best possible experience and help it to evolve over time.

Smart Healthy Communities is an interdisciplinary initiative based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, comprised of specialists in science, computing, design, and humanities. Together, we're working to realize the promise of the information age: not just better tools, but a better world.

The Smart, Healthy Communities Initiative has developed an open-source mobile software platform called Rokwire that integrates diverse streams of data and sensor information to present user-personalized results, while significantly reducing mobile app development. This platform turns overwhelming amounts of local information into personal, meaningful experiences, re-centering data that exists in communities to the people who live within them.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct primary and secondary research to gather user insights that will guide product definition and design.
  • Work in individual and group settings to research, brainstorm, co-create, and transform concept directions into clear, simple digital experiences that meet users’ needs and goals. Conduct user testing and create user personas.
  • Update designs based on the insights gathered through quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Create and iterate on wireframes, prototypes, annotations, and diagrams in order to convey design ideas for meeting project requirements.

Required education, experience, and qualifications:

  • Bachelors in the study of design or equivalent project/portfolio experience.
  • Minimum of two years of User Experience (UX) design experience.
  • Thorough understanding of UX methodologies and visual communication principles.
  • Experience using design research methods to uncover customer insights.
  • Experience with resources such as a pattern library, repositories, and internal communication tools.
  • Experience sketching interfaces, low- and high-fidelity wireframes, and interactive mockups.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Knowledge of human-centered design principles and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; proactive in seeking feedback.
  • Thorough knowledge of front-end web best practices and responsive and adaptive design.
  • Knowledge of graphic design concepts like typography, spacing, use of color, and grid systems.
  • A passion for turning complex issues and requirements into clean, simple, aesthetically pleasing experiences.
  • Illustration skills.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects/assignments simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team. Ability to work productively with little oversight.

Academic Resources

Research

Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

Also integral to the University's mission is a commitment to public engagement. Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

The Arts

A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
