Job Description Summary

A key member of the acquisitions team in our Books division, a new Senior Acquisitions Editor will join a five-person department focused on acquiring books in the humanities and qualitative social sciences. Under the supervision of our Editor-in-Chief, the Senior Acquisitions Editor will focus on acquiring new titles for our robust and longstanding lists in Jewish studies, political studies, international studies, and anthropology. The Editor will do in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief, Director, and other staff in the Acquisitions, Marketing, and Production departments. The Senior Editor will be responsible for the entire life cycle of their lists, including recruiting new authors; managing series; peer review and faculty board approval; list planning; pre-transmittal work; collaborative work to promote the list; internal communication with Press departments; and energetic engagement with disciplinary stakeholders via conference travel, project development, and on-campus appointments.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

Acquiring and transmitting new projects:

  • Acquire 20-25 intellectually significant new projects each year for our lists in the following fields: Jewish studies, political studies, international studies, and cultural anthropology. Particular areas of emphasis will be placed on the following series: Jewish Cultures and Contexts; Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism; and American Governance: Politics, Policy, and Public Law

  • Work with the Editorial Assistants, oversee peer review and presentation of new projects for contract to the in-house Editorial Review Committee.

  • Present projects to the Faculty Editorial Board for vetting and approval.

  • With the Editorial Assistants, co-manage timely transmittals of a set number (to be determined in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief) of new projects per season.

  • Working with the Editor-in-Chief (and with input from Marketing and Production) to create plans for each year’s transmittals and publications with the aim of achieving balanced representation in the market of each list and series.

  • With the Editorial Assistants, co-manage accurate and timely creation and distribution of title metadata for books placed under contract.

  • Seek subventions and support for series and individual titles.

Conference travel and related list development activities:

  • Travel to or participate in disciplinary conferences and meetings to recruit new projects; monitor the progress of projects under contract; and investigate and share knowledge of new disciplinary trends.  

  • Develop productive working relationships with key faculty and academic staff both locally and at other institutions.

  • Participation as possible and appropriate in service activities designed to encourage new projects such as workshops for faculty and grad students, Penn Press-sponsored campus events, committee membership, etc.  

  • As requested, support and mentor early career colleagues

Marketing support:

  • Assist marketing staff in creating copy, including endorsements, and other marketing metadata. 

  • Participation as possible and appropriate in marketing activities such as author events, writing for the Penn Press blog, social media participation, etc.


Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in any field.
  • Four or more years experience in acquiring books, or an equivalent amount of experience within the academy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with leadership and staff in all departments of a publishing operation, including sales and marketing, production, technology, and finance.
  • Ability to travel as needed to professional conferences and to other campuses.
  • An understanding of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
  • A working understanding of press-wide system databases such as Biblio and FireBrand is preferred.
