Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Facilities Management Mechanical Maintenance section’s mission is to provide excellent customer service while maintaining a safe, comfortable environment where students, faculty and staff can live, learn, and work.

Description of Work Continued::

Primary Purpose of the Position:
The position works within the Department of Facilities Management’s HVAC/Plumbing section as an advanced level maintenance technician. The HVAC/Plumbing section maintains the mechanical and plumbing infrastructure, systems, and equipment for the University. An individual in this class performs advanced level duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of chillers, boilers, cooling towers, motors, bas systems, and refrigeration systems. Routine work assignments are in the nature or location of needed repair, and assignments involving work of special or unusual nature are accompanied by specific instructions. The technician exercises considerable independence in performance of routine work, but unprecedented assignments are usually discussed with or supervisor. Work is reviewed supervisor through inspection of work in progress and on the basis of satisfactory operation of equipment repaired or installed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements::

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possessionof the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Optional Guidelines:
Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis

Knowledge skills and abilities::

1. Accuracy Required in Work:
Provides help to and training for lower-level technicians in the proper performance of corrective repairs to various control and energy management systems. The employee must possess an advanced level of knowledge and expertise over a wide range of mechanicals systems.
2. Consequence of Error:
Consequence of error vary with the type of equipment being repaired. Minor errors may result in equipment not performing as designed by the manufacture. A major error could result in a HVAC system failure, building damage or loss of life or limb.
3. Instructions Provided to Employee:
The employee is given supervision under the direction of the HVAC supervisor as well as school and materials to better prepare for new and advanced systems that are installed on the campus.
4. Guides, Regulations, Policies and References Used by Employee:
Employee must comply with EPA regulation concerning the release of CFC’S. Must reference assembly instructions to properly assemble pumps, exhaust fans, air compressors, motors, air handlers, bearing assemblies, and boiler burners. Must follow service policies of equipment manufacture to properly service equipment.
5. Supervision Received by Employee:
The employee is supervised by the HVAC supervisor in any area needed.
6. Variety and Purpose of Personal Contacts:
During the course of work, the employee will come in to contact with students, facility, staff, and visitors to the campus. It is Imperative the employee present a calm, professional appearance and demeanor. The employee will need to from time to time investigate complaints by student, facility, and staff.
7. Physical Effort:
The work will require lifting of equipment and tools on a regular basis. The employee is required to be able to lift 50 pounds And must be able to apply torque to a wrench or valve handle. Routine work involves significant bending, stretching and lifting.
8. Work Environment and Conditions:
Work areas are inside building mechanical rooms as well as outside. The equipment are often times located in hot dirty environments. The employee will often at times be making repairs to pumps, chillers or air handlers in these extreme conditions
9. Machines, Tools, Instruments, Equipment and Materials Used:
Typical tools used by the employee will include basic hand tools such as screw drivers portable power tools such as power drills and voltage and ohms meters and other test equipment
10. Visual Attention, Mental Concentration and Manipulative Skills:
The employee will often perform diagnostic test on equipment that has malfunctioned. The will exercise constant visual attention while completing task
11. Safety for Others:
Carelessness while performing task including the use of power tools could result in the injuries to others. The employee is responsible to be aware of and respond to any unsafe practices in the work place.
12. Dynamics of Work:
The employee must perform as a trainer and mentor for fellow employee’s while performing manual labor of their own. This will require a great deal of energy and concentration.
The employee must possess an expert level of knowledge of a wide range of HVAC systems. The equipment will range from pumps to boilers to cooling towers. The employee must also possess a thorough knowledge of electrical and refrigeration theory.

Fayetteville State University (FSU) is a member of the prestigious University of North Carolina System. Situated in southeastern North Carolina, FSU prides itself in being in one of the most diverse cities in the country and neighbor to one of the nation’s largest military installations – Fort Bragg.

FSU has a rich history that serves as genesis for its current status as a leading institution of higher learning. A year after the Civil War ended, the Phillips School provided primary education to Fayetteville’s black citizens, and the Sumner School provided intermediate education for this population. The two schools were consolidated in 1869 and dedicated in April of that year as the Howard School, in honor of the Freedman’s Bureau chief General O.O. Howard. Seven prominent African-American men pooled $136 to purchase two lots for the first building that housed the Howard School. Robert Harris was named the first principal of the Howard School.

In 1877, the Howard School became not just the first public normal school for African Americans in North Carolina but also the first state-sponsored institution for the education of African-American teachers in the South. It was renamed the State Colored Normal School in Fayetteville that year, Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, Fayetteville State College in 1963, and Fayetteville State University in 1969.

While FSU’s roots are as a teacher education institution, it now offers nearly 70 degrees at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. Many of the programs are accredited by the top agencies. The university’s School of Business and Economics is endorsed by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). AACSB is one of the most prestigious and rigorous accrediting bodies for business programs in higher education. Currently, less than one-third of U.S. business programs and only 15% of the world's business programs have earned AACSB accreditation. Receipt of this distinguished accreditation provides evidence that FSU’s School of Business and Economics has established itself as a leader among business schools.
