The University of Virginia Career Center (herein Career Center) is seeking a qualified team member at the Career Counselor or Assistant Director level (depending on experience) to support our mission of engaging and supporting students in the discovery and pursuit of meaningful lives. The Career Center’s three-fold strategy of exploration, connection and experiential learning requires all team members to be adept at direct student service, program development and execution and alumni connections for students. Direct service delivery includes individual career counseling with students, small group advising, and large group presentations and workshops. Industry and career community research, outreach and programming are also significant parts of the position. This individual will perform other office and University duties as assigned. The Career Center is recruiting for an open position focused on pre-health advising. The pre-health advisor or assistant director will have specific responsibility for the pre-health advising team and the following duties:
- Provide direct service to undergraduate students and alumni who are interested in careers in clinical healthcare. Direct service delivery includes individual advising with students, small group advising, and large group presentations and workshops.
- Research clinical health professions, provide outreach, design and implement programs and events which shepherds students through career exploration, preparation, and applications.
- Maintain up-to-date information on clinical health careers with special attention to underrepresented populations in each field, attend relevant conferences and open houses; visit targeted institutions/programs to provide up-to-date and tailored advice for applicants; and monitor appropriate list serves.
For the position, the priority breakdown is as follows:
Career Counseling Services – 55%
- Provides direct student service through individual appointments and office hours.
- Utilizes a range of assessments including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory, Clifton Strengths, etc. to help students gain clarity of interests, target occupations and increase career-readiness.
- Collaborates with faculty, especially in the College of Arts & Sciences, to collect and deliver industry specific information connecting majors and careers.
- Engages with employers and alumni to collect and disseminate industry and career community related information to students.
Career Services Programming - 35%
- Facilitates creative and engaging workshops and presentations on a variety of career topics, particularly those that help students build job-related skills and experiences.
- Works closely with student groups and organizations such as class councils, peer advisors, resident advisors, orientation leaders, CIOs, and affinity groups to develop and fulfill programing requests.
- Collaborates with Employer Relations Team to assure complimentary interface of programs and services for students interested in On-Grounds Interviewing, career fairs, employer visits, and position listings related to internships and full-time jobs.
Administration and Technology – 10%
- Supports Career Center efforts to develop relevant content and more extensively utilize technology in the delivery of student career-related and industry specific programs and services; implements marketing recommendations to reach students more effectively; in collaboration with other Career Center staff provides benchmarking and recommendations regarding priorities for technology service delivery.
- Master’s degree in education, higher education, counseling, or related field; relevant experience may substitute for advanced degree
- Demonstrated fluency in working across difference
- Strong customer service orientation; creativity, ability to assume responsibility, take initiative and work well independently and in teams
- Proven ability to design and present creative and innovative programs/workshops
- Well-developed organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills; strong oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Master’s degree in education, higher education, counseling, or related field
- Prior experience providing career counseling or advising services in a college/university setting or at least three years related professional experience
- Demonstrated program development and management experience
- Ability to work effectively with students, alumni, faculty and employers
- Knowledge in the use of career assessment tools including Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory, FOCUS2, and Clifton Strengths
- Ability to teach and to instruct in the use of programs, services and resources in a career-related environment
- Proficient computer and web-based skills
- Related university or professional experience
- Experience with Handshake, Symplicity, or other CSM applications
Applicants will be considered for either the Career Counselor or Assistant Director title, based on years of experience.
Career Counselor – With a Master's, no work experience required; without a Master's, two years of relevant experience is required.
Assistant Director – With a Master's, a minimum two years higher ed career counseling experience is required; without a Master's, four years related work experience is required.

COVID Vaccination Requirement
The University of Virginia expects all current and new employees (UVA Health System and Academic), to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
