Teaching assistants will work one or two of the following lab sections:

Monday 6:50 PM – 9:45 PM
Tuesday 8:40 AM – 12:00 PM
Tuesday 2:00 PM – 5:20 PM
Tuesday 6:50 PM – 9:45 PM
Wednesday 2:20 PM – 5:40 PM
Wednesday 6:00 PM – 9:20 PM
Thursday 8:40 AM – 12:00 PM
Thursday 2:00 PM – 5:20 PM
Thursday 6:50 PM – 9:45 PM

Monday and/or Friday Afternoon Pre-Lab Meetings (time to be decided)

This position will work a hybrid schedule of on campus work and remote work.

Job Description Summary:

Lab instructors will rely on their teaching assistants to provide valuable instructional/grading support and offer their unique insights for improving the labs from a student perspective. While helping fellow students learn physics, teaching assistants will become better teachers, better learners, better communicators, and improve their own understanding of physics.

Specific Duties:

Teaching assistants will:

Use technology to assist students in completing their physics labs.

Help students to safely and effectively use specialized scientific apparatuses, computerized data acquisition systems, and data analysis techniques.

* Facilitate small group interactions and deep discussions about theoretical and experimental physics phenomena.

* Assist instructors with conceptual introductions, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and grading as necessary.

* Attend weekly pre-lab meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Successful completion of the Physics sequence 201/203 or 202/204 with a grade of B- or better.

* Interest in physical science

Preferred Qualifications:

* Committed to working both Fall and Spring semesters for a minimum of 5 hours/week.

* Ability to communicate effectively and help students construct their own understandings of lab material.

* Dependable, reliable, and self-sufficient.

Benefits Summary:

Employees are eligible for the following benefits:

One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours.

University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan – can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds.

In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.

Covered under the University of La Verne Workers Compensation Insurance.
