Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Program - Walsh School of Foreign Service - Georgetown University

Georgetown's Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) - founded in 1919 - is a premier school of international affairs. SFS provides a rigorous education grounded in both theory and practice while instilling the Jesuit value of service.

Advising deans of the School of Foreign Service Undergraduate Program (BSFS) work to assist the Dean in carrying out his/her responsibility, for the general efficiency of the instructional programs of the School and in carrying out University policy.

In conjunction with the faculty, advising deans develop and monitor the core curriculum of BSFS and the curricula for the seven majors offered by the program. They initiate, implement, and review academic policies and instruct faculty members in the application of these policies. They monitor students' progress toward the degree, certify them for graduation, and arbitrate important academic issues. They administer registration for courses, provide academic orientation to the University, organize faculty advisors, and chair and serve on numerous School and University committees. As members of the Dean's staff, the advising deans are called upon to represent the School's educational purposes in diverse fora both inside and outside the University.

The SFS is committed to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusive excellence in all spheres. Therefore, advising deans must have the ability and empathy to effectively work with students, both domestic and international, from diverse backgrounds. They have the authority and are expected to handle and resolve many delicate and complex conflicts between student and faculty, student and parent, parent and the University, with all appropriate tact, sensitivity, and a fine sense of academic standards to be applied to each such conflict.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean and Director of the Undergraduate Program, the Assistant Dean serves in an advisory capacity with faculty, other academic deans, and field committee chairs on matters related to curriculum development.

This position's Work Mode has been designated as Hybrid 1 Day.

  • Master's degree or higher
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in academic advising and/or counseling
  • Proficiency in student information systems and applications
  • Ability to work closely with faculty colleagues in an atmosphere of trust, understanding of academic and administrative protocols
  • Ability to relate to and understand the academic and personal needs of students from a diverse set of backgrounds, superior organizational ability
  • Ability to exercise discretion and tact in all interactions

Preferred qualifications

International affairs education or experience in international education
