The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Community Service Officer assists with building security, traffic control, motorist assistance, writing reports, and other public services as needed within the Campus Safety Department’s 24-hour a day services to persons and property on Campus grounds, parking lots, and facilities. This position observes and reports potential security and safety incidents under the direction of the Chief of Campus Safety. Incumbents receive general supervision and guidance in performing duties within established laws, rules, and procedures. Employees in this classification may oversee the work of students and short-term employees.

SUPERVISOR: Chief of Campus Safety or designee

CLASSIFICATION: Range 28 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, up to 28 hours per week. Work assignment hours vary.

BENEFITS: 24 hours of sick leave per year. No medical, dental or vision insurance provided.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability

TYPICAL DUTIES

Essential Functions:

  • Provides a variety of security and safety services, assistance, and reporting to the District’s employees, students, and community visitors.
  • Provides information and promotes awareness among students and employees about District policies regarding security and safety and procedures for accessing Campus Safety services.
  • Observes activities at District facilities, records concerning or suspicious activities, and reports to the appropriate personnel.
  • Observes, collects, and preserves physical and oral evidence.
  • Responds to non-emergency service calls.
  • Responds to first aid calls, provides basic care and aid, and observes and reports pertinent information to appropriate personnel.
  • Prepares accurate non-criminal, incident, traffic, and accident/injury reports.
  • Receives, handles, processes, and communicates confidential information ensuring security and strict rules of confidentiality are maintained.
  • Assists with security monitoring for special events.
  • Interacts with the public, giving directions, responding to inquiries, and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains effective professional relationships with District faculty and staff, students, and public visitors.
  • Provides access control points to campus
  • Assists with monitoring CCTV system and providing information.
  • Performs other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:
  • Campus Safety policies, procedures, and operations.
  • Applicable penal and vehicle codes and other related codes.
  • Principles, practices, procedures, and terminology commonly used in law enforcement.
  • Techniques for observing and reporting suspicious, threatening, dangerous, illegal, and similar activities and behaviors.
  • Verbal and written communication skills and correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary in security, safety, and incident reports.
  • Interpersonal communication skills demonstrating tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Basic first aid principles, methods, and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Learn the operations, procedures, policies, and requirements of assigned office and apply them with good judgment in a variety of procedural situations.
  • Patrol facilities and effectively detect, prevent, and report issues.
  • Prepare accurate, comprehensive reports.
  • Recognize and recall names, faces, and details related to security and safety incidents.
  • Provide basic first aid and accurately observe and report health-related information.
  • Identify security and safety hazards and concerns.
  • Use 2-way radios and similar communication devices.
  • Communicate tactfully and effectively orally and in writing.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions independently.
  • Assist in the composition, review, revision, and finalization of reports including drafting, editing, and proofreading documents containing text, data, and graphics accurately.
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including calculators, copiers, computers, printers, and other standard equipment.
  • Use sound judgement and maintain poise during stressful situations.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds.
Experience/Education

QUALIFICATIONS
Education Required:

  • High school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent.
Experience Required:
  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Other Required Qualifications:
  • A valid California Class “C” driver's license or equivalent or ability to obtain one within 60 days of appointment.
  • A valid CPR card or ability to obtain one within 60 days of appointment.
