Dr. Resa M. Jones, Chair of the College of Public Health’s (CPH) Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Principal Investigator (PI), has an opening for an Assistant Research Director of the Behavioral and Cancer Epidemiology Research Program. The successful candidate will manage multiple cancer research studies and related projects. This position will support a culture of high performance in a fast-paced environment requiring comprehensive knowledge and skills. The Assistant Research Director is an experienced research position, which will include opportunities to publish, lead a research team, and strategize new research funding opportunities.

The position will primarily be responsible for the day-to-day oversight and supervision of Research Managers and Coordinators for several cancer research projects that: 1) examine the behavioral determinants of cancer-related outcomes in the general and underserved populations including the predictors and barriers of colorectal cancer screening, 2) evaluate interventions to increase cancer screening behavior, and 3) determine the role of various exposures (e.g., PFAS-contaminated water and social determinants), socio-economics, and health disparities on cancer-related outcomes.  

The Assistant Research Director will work closely with the PI to provide leadership and overall management of projects including effective communication with lead investigators, project stakeholders, other researchers/collaborators and as well as management of staff. The person will participate in strategic planning for long-term research goals and will assist with proposal and budget development and grant submissions. The incumbent will also contribute to dissemination of research findings as they will conduct review and analysis of complex data and manage staff working on analyses. The person will also participate in manuscript preparation and submission.  

The incumbent will also develop research protocols and manage the day-to-day project activities to ensure timely progress and compliance with study protocols and human subjects’ regulations.  The person will coordinate and plan all meetings of the grants’ collaborators and research teams and be responsible for progress reports for the IRB and funders. The person will communicate with research participants and manage study participant incentives as necessary.

The Assistant Research Director will serve as the projects’ principal administrative liaison for collaborating agencies and/or institutions. The person will also be responsible for hiring as well as supervising and training research staff. They will also mentor students during their experiential training. The incumbent will report and be accountable to the PI.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
Master’s Degree in Epidemiology or similar field with 5 years of experience in observational epidemiologic research and population-based behavioral intervention studies including but not limited to: project management, protocol development, study implementation, survey design, primary data collection, database management, analysis of longitudinal and cross-sectional data (i.e., qualitative and quantitative), and manuscript preparation.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

Required Skills & Abilities:
*Must possess strong critical thinking and complex problem solving skills
*Excellent organizational and time management skills
*Excellent interpersonal skills and effective and oral and written English communicator 
*Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task in a fast-paced research environment 
*Experience conducting reviews of the scientific literature and summarizing the findings for inclusion in manuscripts 
*Knowledge of Federal and State regulations and ethical guidelines related to human subjects research in both community and medical settings. 
*Experience working with IRB and human subjects documentation.
*Experience working with research participants including previous experience communicating with potential study participants to determine and inform of study eligibility is strongly desired. 
*Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of primary care practice is highly desired. 
*Must be proficient with MS Office suite and SAS and have a working knowledge of computer programs including MS Access and other similar programs. Experience with MS Project and Dedoose or Atlas.ti is desired.
*Must be able to maintain subject confidentiality 
*Experience working collaboratively and effectively with an interdisciplinary team 
*Must be able to work independently 
*Must be reliable and punctual 

*Master’s of Public Health degree with focus in Epidemiology or Biostatistics or Master’s of Science in Epidemiology or similar field.
*Seven years of experience in epidemiology research and population-based observational and behavioral intervention studies including: project management, protocol development, intervention implementation, survey design, primary data collection, database creation and management, analysis of longitudinal data and cross-sectional data (i.e., qualitative and quantitative), and manuscript preparation. 
*History of scientific manuscript publications as first- and/or co-author.
