Job Description

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and perform highly skilled machine work in the design, fabrication, repair, and maintenance of advanced systems, equipment, instrumentation, and engineering processes with very close tolerance and precision as required by University faculty and staff for research purposes.

The successful candidate Will work directly with researchers to consult and discuss means, methods and possible problems for translating their ideas, sketches, engineering processes or plans into operative apparatus. The candidate will advise researchers of available equipment on campus and possible alternative designs that might meet their needs. Coordination with other campus departments or outside consultants will be required as necessary.

Job Functions:

  • Communicate with researchers to advise of availability of resources for projects.
  • Machine various metallic and non-metallic materials, including, but no limited to, structural steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminum, titanium, reinforced plastics, wood, and rocks into components and parts; using metal lathes, drill press, milling machine, and various other hand and power tools.
  • May prepare computer-aided drafting drawings showing the detail of engineering processes, and the method of equipment construction or revision, indicating dimensions, fastening methods, and other requirements.
  • Perform MIG, TIG or stick welding as part of the fabrication process; also may perform cutting, heating, or burning operations with oxyacetylene equipment.
  • Build, assemble, troubleshoot, program and repair electronic components and data acquisition systems. Work with researchers to turn their ideas into operative apparatus; provide cost estimates and alternative designs and options.
  • Test completed units, components, and engineering processes; analyze results and make modifications as needed.
  • Operate geomechanical testing systems, explosion testing systems, and waterjet cutting equipment. (On-the-job training available).
  • Keep tools and equipment in operational order by performing and recording routine calibrations and preventative maintenance; proactively repair damaged items, salvage useful parts, or dispose of obsolete items; recommend replacement of major equipment as appropriate.
  • Recommend and implement policies concerning the use of laboratory and shop equipment, housekeeping, and safety precautions; act swiftly to halt unauthorized use or cannibalization of equipment.
  • Attend safety meetings and work as safety liaison between the Center and the University.

Supervision Received

Under general supervision, receives written and oral instructions as necessary, but generally operates independently, or on the basis of design or functional plans and in consultation with the Center Director or requesting researcher.

Supervision Exercised

May provide direct supervision over student workers. Functional supervision is exercised over students, research associates, and faculty while operating shop equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience of at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of mechanics and machinery is desirable.
  • Experience and understanding of computing, electrical, and electronic equipment is desirable.
  • At least two years of experience using CAD or other design programs preferred.
  • Working knowledge on water-jetting and 3D printing is desirable.
  • Working knowledge on explosives handling (with certification) is desirable.
  • A valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Missouri is required.
  • Must be able to grasp, lift, carry and set down objects of moderate weight (25-50 lbs) on a regular basis.
