Job Description Summary

The Director of Nursing is a critical part of the hospital leadership. This individual will report directly to the Director of Imaging and Clinical Service here at New Bolton Center. This position will have 9 direct reports and 23 indirect reports: 1 Assistant Director of Nursing/Evening Lead Supervisor, 5 Lead Nurses, Operating Room Nurse Supervisor, Anesthesia Nurse Supervisor, and the Central Supply Inventory Manager. This individual will work closely with the Clinical Services Manager/Supervisor of Patient Facilities to ensure that the nursing care and the patient comforts are met.

It is very important that this person has significant nursing experience and advanced medical training to be prepared to guide our nursing staff through any situation. The Director will maintain a current and well-rounded knowledge of all medication administration routes, equipment use, patient monitoring, medical care, pharmacology, medical terminology and patient restraint. They will participate in management team meetings and develop nurse training protocols, be available to designate appropriate shift coverage or evaluate a nurse on a given shift, and be flexible in working hours as needed for both clinical and administrative management duties. The Director of Nursing will be responsible for pursuing continuing education for the nursing staff, as well as staying current on the latest developments in the veterinary nursing field. The Director of Nursing is responsible for outreach to all colleges and universities that offer the Veterinary Technician degree, offering educational labs for veterinary technician students to promote New Bolton Center Nursing Department as an educational leader in veterinary nursing. Ultimately, they must inspire the nursing staff to strive for excellence.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and supervise veterinary nursing staff to ensure adherence to all policies and procedures. Develop and implement new policies/procedures as needed to ensure that all standards of veterinary nursing care are upheld. Communicate new notifications/policies to nursing staff through meetings, emails, and trainings.
  • Schedule staff to ensure adequate and appropriate nursing staff coverage for all clinical services 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Manage all time off requests (including vacation and sick time) and weekly time entry in Workday
  • Responsible for all aspects of the interviewing and hiring processes for Nursing staff, including on-boarding/training of new staff, completion of performance reviews for new hires, and management of their 120-day introductory periods. Manage staffing and/or clinical challenges, including conflict management, performance-improvement plans, disciplinary action, and terminations.
  • Proactively engage in ongoing professional development. Remain current on changes/trends in the veterinary nursing field. Pursue continuing education for the nursing staff. Develop and deliver trainings to nursing staff to ensure they have the most up-to-date knowledge.
  • Assist hospital administrator with staff and resource management to successfully maintain the clinical budget and salaries. Assist with budget preparation annually.
  • Promote New Bolton Center Nursing Department as an educational leader in veterinary nursing. Conduct outreach and develop and maintain relationships with all colleges and universities that offer the Veterinary Technician degree, and offer educational labs for their students.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment management.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and 3 to 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required; 7-10 years of managing a large number of veterinary technicians in a hospital setting is strongly preferred. Current Veterinary Technician License required.
Strong leadership and communication skills required.

Ability to work effectively with stakeholders across the hospital, including clinicians, house officers and managers/supervisors of non-medical departments (e.g., facilities, client services, human resources).
Comfortable leading efforts to attract, recruit, hire and retain veterinary hospital staff.
Strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills.
Strong computer skills and ability to learn internal software systems.
