Position Summary:
The Education Assistant-Tutor facilitates the learning process by helping students understand course content in one on one, or group interactions off campus at the MxCC GEAR UP partner sites: Lincoln Middle School or Washington Middle School in Meriden. Tutors provide this support in the specific subject(s) of Math, Science, English or Humanities to a diverse cohort of 8th grade GEAR UP students, including those from low-income, first-generation, underrepresented, underserved, and/or English Language Learner backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
An Associate degree or equivalent in an appropriate field in addition to 1 year of tutoring or relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training which would lead to the competencies required of a position incumbent.

The successful candidate must have experience in the following:

  • Principals and concepts of the assigned academic discipline
  • Tutoring and basic instruction in the assigned academic discipline
  • Information technology literacy

Preferred Qualifications:
Fluency or proficiency in Spanish; Working with youth in a school or enrichment setting.

Major Accountabilities:
Under the direction of the of the GEAR UP Project Coordinator and Site Coordinator, The Gear Up Tutor is accountable for facilitating the learning process through effective performance in these essential functional areas: providing individual and group tutoring in Math, Science, English and/or Humanities; conducting in-class and/or after school tutoring/assistance; conducting tutoring/academic assistance in various virtual/remote learning settings, including virtual classrooms, small groups and/or individual sessions; developing relationships with students to build trust and a positive rapport; utilizing support strategies that will help increase student retention and ensure their successful completion of coursework.

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent may serve as lead or supervisor to student workers as assigned and must maintain collaborative relationships with school faculty and staff.

Starting Wage: $27.76/Hr.
