Description:

The University of Florida College of Medicine, based in Gainesville, Florida, invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of Emergency Medicine. Rank and Tenure status will be commensurate with qualifications.

The Department of Emergency Medicine provides the highest quality of clinical emergency care and is dedicated to the teaching mission of the UF College of Medicine. The Department consists of the UF Health Shands Adult ED, UF Health Shands Pediatric ED, and two freestanding UF Health Shands Emergency Centers (Springhill and Kanapaha). Department faculty are committed to training medical students and residents to become superior educators, researchers, and leaders in emergency medicine. 

The combined emergency departments see over 111,000 patients in 2020 (130,000 patients in 2019) with clinical revenue of almost $15 million and over 316,000 wRVUs annually. The adult and pediatric ED houses 66 adult beds with an annual census of
approximately 50,000 and 20 pediatric beds for 25,000 patient visits annually. The Department has 55 faculty and an extramurally funded research portfolio averaging $1-2 million in federal funding annually. The Department’s residency and fellowship programs are fully accredited by the ACGME. The residency program, with 42 residents, provides rigorous adult and pediatric clinical training with focused experience in ultrasound, EMS, and simulation-based training. It has experienced remarkable expansion in its pursuit of excellence in resident training and has become fully established over the course of the last decade. There are seven fellowship programs and 13 fellows in the Department.

The Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine reports to the Dean of the UF College of Medicine and will direct the patient care, research, and education missions of the Department. The Chair is responsible for overseeing operations and strategy across the Department and providing leadership in the development and execution of all strategic plans and daily operations. In close partnership with all contributors, the Chair will ensure patient-focused, high performing, and results-oriented clinical, educational, and scientific programs. In addition, the Chair will lead initiatives to support exceptional patient service, quality outcomes, faculty and staff satisfaction, growth and volume management, expanded research capabilities, and improved financial
performance.


Qualifications:

The position of Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine requires a dynamic, passionate, and capable physician leader with a proven track record across the spectrum of collaborative clinical leadership, administrative experience, program development, individual scholarship, educational excellence, faculty recruitment, and community engagement. Candidates should hold or be eligible for promotion to the academic rank of Professor and will be selected from a pool reflecting diversity, broadly defined. The ideal candidate will have experience in the development and successful implementation of new clinical programs and services. Candidates must be an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., board certified in emergency medicine and eligible for licensure in Florida.  A distinguished record of innovative leadership, scholarly accomplishments, and excellence in administration is sought and management education or training is highly desired.
