General Job Description/Job Summary: 

The Director of the Student Health Center at the University of Redlands is responsible for student-centered patient care with required supervision and opportunities for consult and collaboration with a Loma Linda University Health Systems physician liaison when needed. The Director of the Student Health Center will possess up-to-date expertise with regard to college health issues, identify public health concerns, and respond to community-based health concerns, as well as individual and population health outcomes. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs, this individual will demonstrate commitment to the values of the University of Redlands, to include diversity, equity, and inclusion in all administrative and clinical practices, have excellent oral and written communication skills, coordinate with, and support other programs and services responsible for student success, and serve a lead role in crisis response, both at an individual and community level, as appropriate. 

The Responsibilities of the Position Include (but are not limited to):

  • Collect subjective data (obtain history).
  • Collect objective data (perform a physical exam).
  • Develop an assessment (diagnosis).
  • Develop and implement a management plan.
  • Facilitate the referral of student-patients to the appropriate health facilities, agencies, and resources within the community as needed.
  • Order pharmacologic interventions.
  • Develop and implement an educational plan.
  • Plan for appropriate follow-up care.
  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of information, adhering to HIPPA and FERPA laws as applicable.
  • Administrative Responsibilities include: maintaining up-to-date policies and procedures, fiscal management, data collection, ensuring all clinical staff training and certifications are up to date, delineating scope of practice parameters, oversight for health care record keeping, and immunization record tracking. Ensures all state and federal guidelines are upheld and best practices (both clinical and administrative) are upheld.
  • Strategic Planning: Enlisting partners in ongoing strategic planning and analysis, setting measurable and concrete goals with ongoing assessment and refinement of goals, annual reports.
  • Staff Supervision: Responsible for supervising health center staff and their annual performance evaluations. Checks professional licensure status, references, and credentials. Organizes and/or finds relevant training opportunities for staff to attend. Establishes guidelines for accountability, productivity, and professionalism within the Student Health Center.
  • Committee memberships: Within Student Affairs and across campus, memberships include: Emergency Management and Response Team, Accommodations Committee. Visible and engaged across campus as a resource regarding student health issues. Liaison regarding health-related issues across campus departments, actively engages with campus partners to develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive holistic health initiatives that incorporate social justice concepts and principles.
  • Consultation: Communicates regularly with LLUHS physician-consult, reviewing changes and updates to nursing protocols. Provides guidance and direction regarding emerging health concerns within the University of Redlands community and surrounding communities. 
  • Clinical Work: Provides culturally sensitive and clinically appropriate assessment and treatment of student-patients by appointment and as triaged. Links students with community provider referrals, follows up as needed. Ensures timely and appropriate clinical documentation to meet standards of care. Provides education regarding health/wellness issues. Provides clinical supervision and consultation as needed and requested.
  • Public Health/Community Partners Liaison: Maintains close contacts with community partners, including San Bernardino Public Health Department, Redlands Community Hospital and Loma Linda University Health, San Bernardino County Emergency Services, and the local, state, and national college health community. Plans for coordinated and cohesive response to community health issues.
  • Communication: Develop materials related to student health and community messaging around health/wellness issues that may be used in ongoing ways; may also be developed during times of crisis for immediate communication to our community regarding specific health-related emergencies. Communications with student patients, their families, and concerned third parties within the boundaries of confidentiality. Works closely with the department of Community Standards and Wellbeing for students returning to campus post-hospitalization. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Years of experience: 2 years as a nurse practitioner in the Primary Care setting
  • Academic credentials: Master’s degree
  • Current California Nurse Practitioner Certificate and Currently California RN license
  • Current California Furnishing Number
  • Maintain current national certification from approved organizations, i.e., (American Nurses Credentialing Center, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners)
  • Current BLS card
  • National Provider Identification Number (NPI)
  • Advanced computer literacy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Women’s Health and/or Public Health a plus
  • Experience as a health care provider on a college campus
  • Experience with the electronic medical records system PyraMED
  • Current DEA Registration number
  • Substantive knowledge of and strong interest in the health issues of college students
