Job Description Summary
As part of the Wharton Computing IDEA Courseware Team, the Instructional Design Support Specialist works closely with faculty and colleagues, facilitating design and delivery that supports extraordinary teaching in the Wharton School's degree programs and related initiatives.

Job Description

This position will:
  • Assist Wharton faculty in providing content to students in face-to-face, hybrid, remote, and web-enhanced courses by crafting and configuring LMS (learning management system, currently Canvas) sites with interoperable teaching tools, site templates, and related connected platforms. During peak times (Aug.-Sep., Dec.-Jan.), a higher % time required.

  • Provide support, advice, internal troubleshooting, and problem resolution for using learning platforms (including Canvas, Zoom, and Panopto) to faculty, teaching assistants, staff, and students; contribute to evening/weekend on-call rotation.
  • Coordinate or provide ongoing operational support for face-to-face, hybrid, remote, or web-enhanced classes with specific instructional design and instructional technology needs.
  • Support and deliver training for Wharton faculty, teaching assistants, and staff on effective uses of Penn's LMS (currently Canvas) and related teaching platforms (including Zoom and Panopto) through consultations by appointment, workshops, and self-service materials. Grow expertise in LMS, educational technology, and instructional design across Wharton. During peak times (Aug.-Sep., Dec.-Jan.), a higher % time required.
  • Contribute to instructional design and educational technology projects for improving learning content, faculty instruction, student engagement, learning activities, or assessment at Wharton. Contribute to team efforts to test, pilot, implement, and evaluate new services.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 1 - 2 years of experience in instructional or academic technology support or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred. Higher education experience strongly preferred.
  • Evident skill and passion for helping educators succeed in teaching.
  • Understanding of presentation, communication, and assessment tools for education and related accessibility requirements. Working knowledge of instructional design preferred.
  • Familiarity with and interest in instructional design, learning principles, and accessibility.
  • Experience in authoring multimedia content with Microsoft Office Suite, HTML/CSS, web video, and similar tools.
  • Familiarity with LMS platforms for higher education, such as Canvas (strongly preferred), Brightspace, or Blackboard.
  • Working knowledge of synchronous (Zoom preferred) and asynchronous (Panopto preferred) instructional delivery platforms.
  • Excellent presentation, writing, project management, and customer service skills. Effective communication with technical and non-technical audiences is essential to success in this position.
  • The ability to work both independently and as a member of a team is required, as is problem solving, juggling multiple priorities, and working within set time frames.
  • Candidates must be willing and able to participate in the team's on-call evening and weekend support rotation.

    Preferred: Advanced degree and prior experience as a university-level instructor or higher education workshop facilitator. Experience developing, teaching, or supporting online courses for higher education.
