Job Description

Basic Function & Responsibilities

The Systems Administrator will be a part of the team that builds, installs, and manages the hardware, software, and security of servers supporting campus operations. This includes our Windows and Linux server administration along with SAN and VMWare environments.

Responsibilities of this position will include installing, configuring and maintaining multiple virtual machines and physical servers in an academic datacenter environment; monitoring the operation and performance of the environment; and investigating new technologies of importance to enhance and improve the services we provide. Technical support to end-users is not the primary focus of the position, however it is expected that any applicant be comfortable in providing that type of support when circumstances require it. Collaborative support of other IT users is a frequent task. Staying current with emerging IT trends related to computing is expected.

We provide or create the tools and services that enable others in IT and the campus to do their jobs.

This position is designed to support the Rolla campus, however it will at times include interaction and collaborative work with other campuses in the University of Missouri System. This position is open to both on-site (Rolla, MO) as well as full or partial remote work.

This is not an on-call position, however there are regularly scheduled maintenance windows during off-hours where certain maintenance will need to be performed. Low-touch availability during off hours is expected.

We are ideally looking for an experienced (not entry level) applicant. This is a developing position, additional duties and responsibilities are expected to change as needs change.


Essential Functions (top critical functions)

  • Participate as a member of a highly technical service driven team. Readily share knowledge and training with other staff members and develop close working relationships with IT and other groups across campus.
  • Install, configure, and maintain multiple Linux and Windows systems in support of campus computing in both Linux and Windows environments. Responsibilities include analysis, documentation, installation, testing, evaluation and installation of new versions and authorized modifications of the solution's hardware, operating systems, application-layer and some database administration work.
  • Configure and monitor vSphere virtualization environments.

  • Provide documentation and training to peers
  • Troubleshoot hardware/software problems and system failures. Determine and initiate appropriate and immediate actions needed to restore normal services with minimal down time. Document occurrence and actions taken. Assess operating procedures followed in resolving issues for effectiveness; may recommend modifications to standard procedures found to be inadequate, unclear or ineffective.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree in a computing or other technical related field is desirable, however demonstrated equivalent experience or knowledge obtained through alternative educational or career paths will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with the Linux and/or Windows operating system and utilizing the command line interface is necessary. It is highly desirable to have experience with both Linux AND Windows.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, quickly identify and correct problems (debug) using system utilities and diagnostics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computing, storage, and networking hardware is required.
  • Experience with scripting (e.g. Python, Perl, PowerShell) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and work independently with minimal direction, and in a collaborative and diverse environment is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Successful candidate must be authorized to work in the US.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with networking is highly desirable, applicant should have understanding of IP addressing and subnets at a minimum. Experience with IPv6 is a plus, but is not actively in use in our environment yet.
  • Experience working with one or more database environments (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, Oracle) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with VoIP telephony software such as FreeSWITCH or Asterix is desirable.
  • Experience working in an environment with frequently changing priorities and goals is desirable.
  • Experience using network analysis software such as Wireshark as well as system level monitoring and diagnostic tools.
  • Experience with an automated configuration management system is desired.
  • Experience using a ticket/work management system such as JIRA or Trello.
  • Experience with cloud environments (GSuite, Azure/M365, Amazon Web Services) is desirable, though not a primary focus of the position.
  • Ability and demonstrated use of version control management tools such as Git is desirable, and applicant will be expected to learn that tool very quickly if not.
