Research Programmer (Multiple Positions)

The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Research Programmer (Multiple Positions).

This position focuses on software engineering, encompassing areas such as Web programming (Python, Ruby, JavaScript/AJAX, Web 2.0/3.0, HTML, CSS), databases, middleware, and scientific computing for multiple projects in the Center for Research Computing (CRC). Successful candidates will assist with research projects to: 1. ensure that current features remain functional, and/or 2. maintain and develop software frameworks that support scientific work. Also, successful candidates will install and upgrade hardware and software as needed.

Software engineering at the CRC relies upon languages such as Python, Javascript, PHP, Java, Objective-C, and SQL to support scientific applications, databases, and the analysis of data. Python frameworks and libraries such as Django, RabbitMQ, and Celery are also utilized. Database technologies in use include PostgreSQL and MySQL.

Some skill in Linux systems administration is desirable, in particular with respect to distributions such as Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu, and Debian.

From time-to-time, this position will engage in modest user support and training activities, e.g.: assist with the development of online help facilities, training materials.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with previous experience of 1-2 years. Candidates should have a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or an equivalent level of experience. An advanced degree (MS or Ph.D.) in Computer Science is a plus.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Experience with and/or strong knowledge and interest in some or all of the following is preferred:
• Established development skills in Python, Javascript, HTML/JSX and SQL.
• DBA and development skills in PostgreSQL, MySQL, and familiarity with NoSQL concepts and libraries.
• Web and application server administration skills with Apache and Nginx.
• System administration skills with Linux servers such as Ubuntu and RHEL/CentOS.
• Cloud Deployment via AWS and Google Cloud Platform
• Containerization platforms such as Docker or Singularity and orchestration via Docker Swarm or Kubernetes.
• Some programming experience outside of the academic environment is highly desired.
• Experience with mobile development either using cross-platform frameworks or native development is desired although not required.

Experience working within a team.

The ability to pickup and learn general concepts and technologies quickly and independently.
Attends and contributes to meetings by giving updates, feedback, and some suggestions on direction; communicates with all other developers on team and may be in direct contact with PI for specific questions/feedback if necessary.



Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of MPI or OpenMP is a strong plus
Experience developing within the scrum software development framework is also a plus.
