Description

The Tickle College of Engineering (TCE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a full-time Data Analyst in the Engineering Research Office.  This position is key for the college with respect to (1) determining optimal use of organizational data, while providing analyses and insights to support the design and implementation of strategic initiatives, enhance performance across all mission areas, and elevate the college’s national reputation; (2) creating analytical tools using modern programming languages and statistical software, plus explaining to users how the tools will both facilitate their work and provide new data-driven perspectives that users had not previously considered or requested; and (3) continuing to improve and automate existing processes and reports.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing and interpreting large datasets to discover and present original, actionable insights to college leadership to drive best strategies for pursuing college goals, enhancing student and faculty success, and improving college operations
  • Designing and generating reports and dashboards to inform strategic planning, financial planning, resource allocation, and communication of key performance measures to internal and external stakeholders
  • Creating dynamic visuals to present complex information in the best and simplest form to enable quick comprehension by college leadership and convey compelling messages to key constituencies 
  • Organizing, performing, and coordinating the completion of the extensive surveys for external ranking of college performance by US News & World Report (USNWR) and the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE)
  • Leading the ongoing examination of college research metrics in order to identify opportunities to (1) enhance faculty success with respect to research funding and (2) expand the college’s research funding profile across federal agencies
  • Serving as the clearinghouse and data source for information requests from units within college administration who will incorporate such information into annual reports, newsletters, and gift proposals
  • Creating direct access to clean datasets to empower users with the ability to extract data that are specific to their needs
  • Building relationships with UTK organizations external to the college to create seamless data flows for college needs, and collaborating to build a university-wide community in academic affairs for setting standards and formats concerning data presentation and priorities for research-related topics


  • Qualifications
    Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, economics, or related disciplines
  • Four (4) years of experience using software for data aggregation, analysis and presentation such as software for programming, databases, spreadsheets, statistical analysis, graphical presentation and reporting
  • Proficiency with SQL
  • Demonstrated commitment to cooperative teamwork
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with superiors, colleagues, and personnel who provide data or expect analysis from the data
  •                Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, economics, or related disciplines
  • Four (4) years of experience in an academic setting post completion of last academic degree
  • Proficiency with R, MS Excel, VBA, Power BI
