JOB GOAL:

This position works Monday-Friday 7:00-11:00am OR Monday-Friday 11:00am-3:00p and is located at Iowa Medical and Classification Center.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, the Instructor is responsible for teaching basic skills, literacy and HSED (High School Equivalency Diploma) subject areas (reading, writing, social studies at Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC.)

  • DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Effectively teach basic skills, literacy and HSED subject areas to eligible offenders in a variety of instructional formats.
  • Work with special education youth in order to meet the requirements of existing Individualized Education Plans.
  • Work with ELL (English Language Learning) students to improve basic English skills.
  • Maintain student and program records for reporting purposes.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors at IMCC, as well as in the Department of Corrections, on the development of innovate curricula for offenders.
  • Act as a liaison among the Iowa Department of Corrections, IMCC, and Kirkwood Community College, supporting the operations of IMCC.
  • Know and follow Department of Corrections security protocols and policies including key and radio control, supervision of incarcerated individuals in education, de-escalation and personal safety techniques, which may include training and use of chemical agents, first aid, and incident command systems.
  • Complete Department of Corrections training quarterly, face-to-face and online.
  • Know and follow rules, policy, and procedures regarding juvenile offenders in adult prisons.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

    PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

    Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Bachelor’s degree with successful teaching or training experience is required. In addition, candidates must pass IMCC security clearance.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Candidates with prior corrections, adult education, or at-risk teaching experience are preferred.
  • A current Iowa standard teaching license is preferred.
