Job Description Summary
Penn Law's Biddle Law Library seeks candidates for the newly created position of Associate Director for Scholarly Data and Innovation, joining a talented team of librarians interested in developing intellectual partnerships across the institution and dedicated to providing outstanding support to the Penn Carey Law community. Reporting directly to the Director of the law library, the Associate Director will design and execute the Law Library's scholarly communication and impact strategies, including expanding existing and developing new library services for faculty publication and scholarship support. The ideal candidate will be interested in developing robust support for measuring, analyzing, expanding, and promoting the scholarly impact of Penn Law's highly interdisciplinary faculty. This position has the possibility to grow into working with and teaching technology and data skills, and/or into creating or supporting a data visualization program.
Penn Carey Law has approximately 750 JD, 125 LLM, and 10 SJD students. A permanent faculty of 50+, half of whom have a PhD in addition to a JD, is deeply committed to interdisciplinary research and teaching. The School has close ties with the Wharton School, the Annenberg School for Communications, the Center for Bioethics and graduate departments such as history, philosophy and sociology. It offers several joint-degree programs. Biddle Law Library is one of the major law collections in the nation with particularly strong collections in numerous areas of American law, legal history and foreign and international law. The American Law Institute was founded at Penn in 1923, and Biddle is a repository for its archives. Philadelphia is rich in legal history, the home of the National Constitution Center and a city of many cultural opportunities.
Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Design, execute, and oversee the Law Library's scholarly communication and impact strategies.
- Manage and maintain the Law School's digital scholarship platforms, including bePress' Expert Gallery Suite, Digital Commons, and faculty working papers in SSRN.
- Coordinate work of librarians and staff who support digital scholarship work; may supervise librarians and/or support staff.
- Serve as point of contact to faculty members regarding publishing, digital scholarship, and maximizing impact and reach of scholarship.
- Assist law faculty in creating and maintaining scholarly profiles (e.g. ORCID, HeinOnline, SSRN, Google Scholar).
- Evaluate and implement analytics tools to monitor and measure scholarly impact.
- Coordinate with Law School Communications department to ensure cohesive approach to promotion of faculty scholarship and scholarly activities, and with IT department regarding faculty profile pages on law school website.
- Serve as point of contact for current students and alumni regarding article submissions on Scholastica.
- May assist with reference and faculty services as needed.
- May participate in the library's educational programming (e.g., teaching advanced legal research or other co-curricular instructional efforts).
- Serve on professional committees and attend conferences.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of information or library science; 5 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Interest in data and scholarly communications.
- A strong service orientation.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other decision-makers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Experience working with data and in scholarly communications.
- Interest in working with and teaching technology and data skills.
