The Department of Public Health Sciences is committed to excellence in research and teaching, to building a faculty and staff committed to preparing a diverse workforce, and to extending educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds. Our mission is to advance health equity and well-being in an urbanizing world. The Department has extensive ties with local and regional health departments, health care systems, and other community partners. In addition to our CEPH-accredited BSPH, MPH and PhD degree programs in Public Health Sciences and Health Services Research; we offer a BS in Health Systems Management, and a CAHME-accredited MHA program; and we collaborate with the School of Data Science in the delivery of an MS in Health Informatics and Analytics. The Department is a member of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) with 30 full-time faculty serving over 1,500 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. The Department is housed in the College of Health and Human Services, which also includes the Department of Kinesiology, School of Nursing, and School of Social work.

Description of Work:

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Professor will lead collaborative, interdisciplinary research in health and public policy, teach courses relevant to health and public policy in the College of Health and Human Services and in the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Public Policy, and serve as a research mentor to graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and junior faculty with interests in health policy. The Metrolina Distinguished Professor will engage in community activities, developing and maintaining partnerships with public health, healthcare, community, governmental, and/or industry agencies.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

The scholar must be nationally recognized and someone who will contribute to our portfolio of interdisciplinary research on the development and evaluation of health policy and/or the effects of public policy on health outcomes. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to attract external funding. Eligible candidates are those whose research includes one or more stages of the CDC Policy Development cycle and/or examines one or more CDC-defined policy areas across local, state, national or international contexts. Community-engaged activities, as evidenced by the ability to develop sustainable relationships with local health departments, healthcare systems, community organizations, governmental entities, and/or industry agencies, are expected.

Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate (e.g., PhD, DrPH) in a health- or policy-related field and eligibility for appointment at the rank of either Associate Professor or Professor with tenure in the Department of Public Health Sciences. In addition to the research record described above, the successful candidate must demonstrate acumen in teaching and the capacity to serve as a research mentor and leader. The extent to which the candidate can contribute to our vision and mission, as well as the programs and goals of the Department of Public Health Sciences will be considered. If appointed at the rank of Professor, the successful candidate will hold the title of Distinguished Professor; if appointed at the rank of Associate Professor, the successful candidate will hold the title of Distinguished Scholar.
