The ITS Infrastructure Services team is looking for Infrastructure Engineers to support and build upon our ongoing efforts at providing reliable and resilient infrastructure services for use across the entire Middlebury College community. We seek Infrastructure Engineers who can design, implement, and administer secure and reliable solutions and services. Essential Functions:
<b> Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.</b>
Infrastructure Engineers on the ITS Infrastructure Services team
  • research unique solutions to technical challenges
  • design, deploy, operate, administer, and maintain new and existing on premise and cloud systems and services
  • assist with in incident response activities to help identify, prioritize, and resolve service issues
  • assist with the automation, deployment, configuration, and operational processes
  • assist with the integration of technology solutions
  • monitor the health and performance of technology infrastructure and services
  • continuously improve service quality
  • consult with clients across the community about technology challenges and opportunities
  • inventory systems and services
  • identify and track security vulnerabilities
  • apply software updates and security patches
  • participate in security incident detection and response
  • assist with vendor selection and vendor management
  • assist with procurement processes and hardware lifecycles
  • contribute technical expertise to a wide variety of projects
  • participate in cross-functional teams
  • document systems, processes, and solutions
  • cross-train colleagues and mentor new teammates
  • quickly learn new systems and technologies


On-Call ResponsibilitiesThe Infrastructure Engineer participates in the after-hours ITS On-Call rotation. ITS is responsible for responding to security and operational incidents 24×7, 365 days a year. As a participant in the rotation, the engineer is expected to cover on-call duty, carry a pager and respond to security and/or operational incidents that crop up for roughly one week every two months. Additional details are provided in the ITS On-Call policy. Key RelationshipsThe Infrastructure Engineer collaborates closely with other ITS teams and ITS Leadership to ensure that all facets of deploying, maintaining, and securing complex IT systems are properly addressed. The Engineer will maintain key relationships with:

  • Faculty and staff across campus
  • IT staff at Middlebury campuses and offices including Monterey
  • Student workers, interns, and representatives of student organizations

General Responsibilities:
  • Works cooperatively with colleagues, partners and customers.
  • Position Middlebury to take advantage of evolving information technology, evaluates opportunities, evaluates trends, analyzes and compares services, processes and infrastructure in use at peer institutions and industry generally.
  • Maintain professional contacts with peers at other Higher Educational institutions, equipment and service vendors and professional organizations related to information technology.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to assist the department in achieving its mission and goals.





Qualifications
Education:

Associates degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Subject Matter ExpertiseThe Infrastructure Engineer serves as a technical resource for other Infrastructure Services staff, ITS staff, and Middlebury constituents, providing guidance on security and systems design, implementation, and support questions. To fulfill this obligation, the Infrastructure Engineer must maintain a high degree of knowledge about the systems administration and networking. The Infrastructure Engineer is expected to be proficient in multiple technologies, and an expert initially in at least two of the following major areas of knowledge:
  • Systems Administration
  • Networking
  • Telephony and Communications
  • Software Development, Automation, and Integration
  • Service Health and Performance Monitoring
  • Vulnerability and Patch Management
  • Software Deployment
  • Endpoint Engineering
  • Mobile Device Management
  • Identity and Access Management

  • Data Center Management



Planning and Communications SkillsStrong relationship, communication and planning skills consistent with effective participation in an organizationally critical, complex, highly technical and multi-site IT service organization.


Experience:
5 or more years of experience in the successful delivery of Information Technology services. Demonstrated expertise in the design, implementation, security and hands-on management of complex IT systems, networks, and facilities. Demonstrated industry experience with Information Security fundamentals, including inventory, protection, detection, response, and recovery.Experience in higher education environments is preferred.


Physical Demands:
Occasional data center related activities such as racking servers and accessing network closets. Shipping and receiving computers, servers, network hardware, etc.
