Plan and conduct experiments using specialized biophysical methods and confocal microscopes, and other state-of-the-art microscopes to analyze biological function of proteins under study in live cells. Design plasmids and use recombinant DNA techniques and molecular methods to construct and validate plasmids. Use Drosophila genetics to select and characterize germline transformants.
Prepare specimens for confocal microscopy and other specialized types of microscopy; design experimental microscopy protocols to test specific hypothesis regarding biological mechanisms and protein function in live cells.
Plan and conduct biophysical imaging experiments using highly technical confocal microscopes and other state-of-the-art microscopes.
Collect data using microscopy and biophysical protocols, as well as other procedures that involve use of advanced laboratory instruments.
Design, construct and validate specific plasmids using recombinant DNA techniques and molecular methods.
Design and perform Drosophila genetics experiments to select germline transformants, test transformants for specific functions, and map insertions to chromosomes.
Analyze, evaluate and interpret data; perform statistical analysis as needed. Prepare reports regarding conclusions, recommended further experiments, next steps in the analysis, and needed controls.
Confer with principal investigator to determine specific experiments to be included in the research and to discuss the interpretation of results.
Review scientific literature to keep abreast of new findings and to obtain information regarding experimental methods to aid in the design of new procedures and methods.
Supervise and train students or lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training: Work requires a BS, BA, master’s degree or doctorate in biophysics, biochemistry, cell biology, engineering, chemistry, genetics, or a related scientific field.
Experience: Work requires a minimum of 3-4 years research experience. A related master's degree or doctorate may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years’ experience or a doctorate in lieu of 4+ years’ experience.
