Organizational Unit Overview:

The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program is a partnership between Brody School of Medicine and Vidant Medical Center that brings together simulation-based education throughout the medical center, health sciences campus, and university. The mission of the Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, patient, learner, and practitioner safety, and to improve multidisciplinary team performance through the use of simulation modalities. The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center (VMC), which is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the principal teaching hospital for ECU. VMC is a Level I trauma center with 58 ED beds and a dedicated 16 bed Children’s ED. It is located in the eastern part of North Carolina in Greenville with 981 total beds. It serves an estimated 1.4 million people in 29 counties and is the primary teaching hospital for ECU Brody School of Medicine with an estimated 125,000 visits per year.

Job Duties :

The fellowship is designed for Emergency Medicine residency graduates interested in pursuing a career in simulation-based education. The fellow will be given the academic appointment of Clinical Instructor in the Brody School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The fellow will spend a minimum of 30 hours per week in fellowship related educational activity in and/or related to the Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program. Fellow educational activities are based in the Clinical Simulation Center at Brody School of Medicine and include simulation activities in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Brody School of Medicine, Vidant Medical Center clinical services, regional outreach with the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit, ECU Innovation and Design Lab Osprey Transport Simulator, Office of Clinical Skills Assessment and Education, and other Health Sciences campus colleges and schools. The fellow will participate in and attend simulation faculty and staff development sessions offered by the Clinical Simulation Program including administrative meetings, quality and safety initiatives, scenario writing and debriefing workshops, facilitator training, Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator exam preparation, simulation education and research group meetings, and interprofessional education activities. The fellow will have the opportunity to educate and assess interdisciplinary learners including medical and nursing students, residents, fellows, nurses, allied health professionals and students, EMS providers, military professionals, and practicing physicians using simulation-based educational techniques. Fellows will have the opportunity to create and implement new and innovative simulation materials and will have protected time to design, create, and execute a research agenda that is compatible with individual interest. The fellow is expected to perform emergency medicine clinical duties as a junior attending physician and expected to work 8-10 clinical hours per week. The fellow will work clinical shifts as an emergency medicine attending in the Vidant Medical Center Emergency Department.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Candidate prerequisites include graduation from an accredited U.S. emergency medicine residency program, board eligibility/certification in Emergency Medicine, and a demonstrated interest in academics and simulation-based education. The candidate should be eligible for medical licensure in the state of North Carolina.
