The Department of Internal Medicine is comprised of ten divisions with over 85 full-time faculty and 150 support staff members. Each of the divisions has its own specialty clinic.

Internal Medicine is home to seven fellowships and two residency programs. In recent years collaboration and funding have come from many nationally recognized organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Service Administration, American Heart Association, NC Department of Human Health and Human Service. More locally, we have partnered with Vidant Medical Center Foundation, Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and the Pitt County Health Department. Additionally, Internal Medicine participates in many pharmaceutical-sponsored clinical trials.

We collaborate with the Department of Pediatrics, the Department of Surgery, and the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences within the Brody School of Medicine. The Department of Internal Medicine has a close affiliation with Vidant Medical Center and serves a diverse population in eastern North Carolina. Vidant Medical Center, a 974-bed tertiary care teaching facility, serves as the primary teaching and clinical care venue for an integrated nine hospital hub and spoke system.

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine has an active outpatient pulmonary and sleep practice, in-patient consult service, and interventional bronchoscopy capability which includes EBUS and navigational bronchoscopy.

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine provides services to patients in the MICU, CVICU, and NICU.

The fellowship training program in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine has expanded from four to sixteens fellows.

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine expansion is driven by the growth of the medical complex and added emphasis on translational research, including a large clinical base and a lung biopsy group.

The Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. VMC is a level 1 trauma center and has been ranked one of the top 50 teaching hospitals in the United States.
