JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for enforcing state and local laws as well as campus regulations and for protecting life and property for Middle Georgia State University.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Patrols to detect and deter crime and to offer assistance when needed.
  • Enforces parking regulations; issues citations.
  • Prepares required reports.
  • Checks the security of buildings.
  • Investigates suspicious activities or persons.
  • Investigates traffic accidents and criminal or non-criminal incidents.
  • Makes arrests and issue citations to individuals who have committed a crime.
  • Testifies in court as required.
  • Provides assistance to motorists.
  • Responds to emergency incidents.
  • Provides security and traffic enforcement at special events.
  • Respond to calls for maintenance issues and relay information as needed.
  • Performs related duties.
  • Assist local jurisdictions as outline in the Georgia mutual aid act.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of community policing principles.
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness, response and recovery principles.
  • Knowledge of public safety principles as related to college campuses.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The work is performed very independently; the supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines, and assists the employee with unusual situations which do not have a precedent. The employee plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignment in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training or accepted practices.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Official Code of Georgia, Annotated, department standard operating procedures, the university employee handbook, the Board of Regents Policy Manual, the university student handbook, university parking policies, the university tobacco policy, the university emergency operations plan, the university hazard mitigation plan, the university business continuity plan, Georgia Crime Information Center guidelines, Department of Justice guidelines, Georgia Police Officer Standards and Training Council regulations, state crime lab rules, and rules of the District Attorney’s Office. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in each application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

  • The work consists of varied supervisory, law enforcement, and emergency response duties. The necessity of responding to a variety of circumstances combined with strict regulations contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in public safety operations for Middle Georgia State University. Success in this position contributes to the safety of students, staff, faculty and visitors and to the enforcement of federal and state laws as well as college rules and regulations.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other university employees, students, parents, representatives of other law enforcement agencies, representatives of other emergency response agencies, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to motivate or influence persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must be able to perform all duties, services, and functions of a uniform police officer as outlined in the MGA Police Department Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
  • The work is typically performed in the field while intermittently sitting, standing, running, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in buildings, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and hazardous or dangerous situations. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. as well as other specialized law enforcement equipment.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to attend and successful complete basic police academy.
  • Ability to successfully pass department background investigation.
  • Ability to successfully pass Human Resources background investigation.

Preferred:

  • Post-certified peace officer with knowledge of public safety principles as related to university campuses.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of community policing principles.
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness, response and recovery principles.
  • Skill in the operation of specialized law enforcement equipment.

SALARY:

  • This position is non-exempt (bi-weekly paid).
  • Pay Grade PS-4.
