Job Summary

The Instructional Designer supports the University’s mission to advance the effective use of current and emerging technologies to develop innovative and engaging e-learning environments in the department of E-Campus. Ensures that the University's learning management system is properly maintained, works to enhance the faculty’s pedagogical understanding of technology in e-learning environments, and serves as an advocate for institutionalizing e-learning within the culture and administration of the University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and administer the learning management system and other instructional technologies to serve the educational and administrative community with resources in support of instruction.
  • Ensure that eCampus web sites are fully functional, easy to navigate, usable, and accurate.
  • Design, develop, and maintain dashboards to reflect technologies supported by the department.
  • Translate application requirements into user-friendly systems and applications.
  • Consult with faculty and staff to adapt existing courses and programs for online delivery and other forms of e-learning.
  • Support e-learning by designing, developing, and implementing tools and resources for students.
  • Provide telephone, in-person, and online (e.g., email, web-conferencing) contact for administrative and educational support and solutions.
  • Design and develop online instructional materials that support academic courses/programs grounded in sound educational theory and best practices in instructional design.
  • Work with faculty to develop teaching and learning environments that emphasize active learning and incorporate appropriate instructional technologies.
  • Generate reports and analysis for Director.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge in using learning management systems and other instructional technologies, as well as, knowledge of software administration.
  • Ability to understand, analyze and diagnose faculty, staff, and student needs and translate these needs into instructional solutions.
  • Proficiency in web and mobile technologies with programming knowledge of Application Programming Interface (API) and web development tools such as Java, HTML, XML, and .NET.
  • Ability to enhance web-based courses with knowledge of best practices and e-learning principles.
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrable skills in applying a variety of software applications and web-based authoring and publishing systems: e.g., Camtasia, Photoshop, HTML editors, WebEx, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of systems analysis and development, applications programming, and database analysis.
  • Ability to design and develop user-friendly interfaces that comply with accessibility as defined in Section 508.
  • Working knowledge of managing vendor-supplied application maintenance and patch life cycles.
  • Ability to facilitate quality control and ensure that the online materials and practices are successful by applying established CSU and Faculty Senate criteria to meet course learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of instructional process.
  • Ability to understand, analyze and diagnose faculty, staff, and student needs and translate these needs into instructional solutions.
  • Ability to enhance web-based courses with knowledge of best practices and e-learning principles.
  • Skilled in developing and conducting faculty training workshops and materials.
  • Ability to gather data, compile analytics, and generate reports.
  • Knowledge of training theory and practices demonstrated by an ability to develop and deliver technical training and user documentation.
  • Ability to teach/instruct faculty to integrate existing and emerging instructional and interactive technologies into their courses/programs.
  • Strong consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate support.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to translate complex technical concepts into terms to support e-learning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in working with users to interpret needs and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving and writing skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with colleagues within the University.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive procedures and policies.
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study
  • Three years of experience supporting information systems and technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Experience in educational technology, instructional design, distributed learning, or an equivalent discipline
  • Experience using and managing Learning Management Systems
  • Experience with technical information systems and application program packages
  • Experience and a working knowledge of common software application packages used in higher education teaching
  • Experience in course development and design
  • Experience in a team-based environment
  • Experience in conducting workshops in higher education

Compensation

Classification: Information Technology Consultant - Career
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,500/month - $5,800/month
Hiring Range: $4,372/month - $10,792/month
