Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Engagement and Dean of Students, the Associate Dean of Campus Life position is a key member of the senior leadership team for the Division of Student Engagement. A new addition to Student Engagement, this position is a merger of the Office of Residential Education & Housing and the Office of Student Activities. The Associate Dean works with the Dean of Students to provide primary leadership for the College’s co-curricular learning program. Specifically, this position will partner with the Dean to create a comprehensive and cohesive programming model that provides targeted opportunities for student involvement in extracurricular activities and residential education which complement in-class learning, foster interpersonal development, and encourage greater commitment to the College. This position will supervise three professional staff Area Managers, an administrative assistant, graduate assistants and the unit’s student employee program. With the support of collateral assignments for the Area Managers, the Associate Dean of Campus Life position maintains primary leadership or supervisory responsibility for the following areas of the co-curricular learning program: (a) Fraternity and Sorority Life, (b) Orientation and First Week programming, (c) student organizations, (d) community service, (e) leadership development, (f) commuter student programming, (g) multicultural programming, (h) student conduct, and (i) residential education and housing. The Associate Dean of Campus Life will also assist the Dean of Students with Title IX education and investigations.

Job Duties (but not limited to):

  • Provide primary oversight and leadership for the Office of Campus Life, which includes Residential Education and Housing, Student Activities, Orientation, Student Conduct, Leadership Development, Commuter Student Programming, Multicultural Programming, and Fraternity and Sorority Life in a manner that supports the mission of the Division of Student Engagement and the College.
  • Coordinate communication with external units regarding building services, custodial services, fire/life safety requirements, as well as maintenance requests, and oversee the monitoring, reporting, and follow up functions for these initiatives within the residential community.
  • Serve as support to the primary staff members (area managers) responsible for responding to student crisis/emergencies within the residential community and oversee the on-call duty rotation for the professional staff (Area Managers) and residential student staff (resident advisors).
  • Manage the selection as well as training for student employees; ensure that the functions of residential student staff are understood, aligned, and integrated with the mission of the Division of Student Engagement and the College.
  • Arrange and manage the annual student involvement fair, orientation, first week programming, and all other student activities.
  • Supervise all student volunteer and paid student staff; manage the selection as well as training for these volunteers and employees.
  • In coordination with the professional staff, oversee the implement the comprehensive programming model for residential education that complements in-class learning, fosters interpersonal development, and encourages greater commitment to the College within the halls and the individual programming responsibilities of residential student staff.
  • Oversee administrative functions of the Office, including, but not limited to, room assignments, room changes, move in/out procedures, damage assessments, health/safety inspections, fire drills, incident reporting, residential tracking policy, etc.
  • Serve as a College conduct officer investigating and adjudicating allegations of misconduct in an educational manner that encourages the personal development of the student and assign cases to other staff members for investigation and adjudication.
  • Provide leadership and direction for all assessment functions within Office of Campus Life.
  • Assist the Vice President for Student Engagement & Dean of Students in providing Office budgetary oversight and forecasting.
  • Assist the Vice President for Student Engagement & Dean of Students in revising existing policies and developing new policies pertaining to the Office as needed.
  • Assist the Vice President for Student Engagement & Dean of Students in developing a long-term plan for Campus Life at the College.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the development of interpersonal relationships with and among students in residential communities to ensure an inclusive, safe, secure, healthy living and learning environment.
  • Serve on various College committees and/or task forces as requested.
  • As with all Division of Student Engagement employees, the Director of Residential Education & Housing; Coordinator of Student Conduct is expected to engage in continual professional development by maintaining a knowledge of current literature, trends, and best practices in student affairs/higher education administration as well as conducting themselves in a professional manner that promotes the mission of the Division of Student Engagement and the College.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, public administration, counseling, law, or related field from an accredited institution and at least three years of professional experience at the Director level in an area of Student Affairs. Previous experience directly supervising student staff in a college residential living environment required. Previous experience working as a live-in professional residence life staff member at a four-year institution of higher education and student conduct experience required. A commitment to maintaining confidentiality and exhibiting a highly cultivated degree of political savvy are required. Ability to demonstrate empathic skills is required. This position also requires significant evening and weekend work. Previous experience supervising professional staff is highly desirable. A strong sense of humor is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Commitment to the mission of church affiliated liberal arts institutions like LaGrange College.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, inclusion, and social justice in the collegiate setting.
  • Proven record of being able to utilize effective time management, organization, prioritization, and attention to detail while performing multiple duties, often under stress.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, written, as well as oral communication skills.
  • Experience supervising residential student staff.
  • Experience in student conduct, conflict resolution, crisis response, assessment, and budget management, preferably in a residential setting.
  • Ability to foster relationships across campus and build collaborative programs with faculty.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with current technology and social networking platforms to advertise programs that reach the student body.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the connection between student affairs and the educational mission of the College.
  • Proven record of innovative and strategic thinking as well as a passion for building and adapting programs to meet the changing needs of today’s students.
