Position Summary

The Advisor implements academic advising strategies that lead to studentpersistence and achievement of student learning outcomes.  Providesacademic advising, career advising, and coordinated connection to resourcesacross the college and in the community.  Develops rapport with studentsin their cohort to support their success.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Academic Advising andSupport for Persistence

Provides academic advising tostudents in their defined cohort.  Advises students based oncareer/academic pathway to develop an academic plan that is connected to andsupports their career and financial plans via a variety service formats(in person,phone, e-mail, live chat, etc.) determined by student need and institutionalsupport for these formats.  Serves as helpful and informed point ofcontact for assigned caseload of new, current, and/or returning students. Collaborates with colleagues across all campus locations to coordinate servicesfor students.

Stays current on resourcesnecessary to provide accurate information or connection to specializedresources on in-demand careers, transfer opportunities, programs of study,enrollment processes, program admission criteria, documents needed, financialaid, new student programs, entry assessment, academic planning, courseselection and registration.

Develops and clarifieseducational goals by conducting interviews, analyzing student needs, andreviewing applicable transcripts and other documents.
Explains educational programoptions and assists students with developing a plan for degree and/or goalcompletion.

Assists students experiencingacademic difficulty (warning, probation and academic dismissal) to develop aplan of action to promote academic success and conducts appropriate academiccounseling intervention.

Maintains contact with studentsfor continued follow up and support of academic success.

Provides career advising assistance to students.Reviews career interest assessments identifying career matching theirinterests, values and skills to assist students to develop academic planssupporting their career goals. Makes appropriate referrals for in-depth careerservices to the Office of Career Services.

Customer Service

Answers student and general public basicinquiries and/or directs them to proper resources.  Assists businesspartners from other College departments such as Financial Aid with paperworkand tasks to address student needs.  Contributes to office efficiency asneeded by answering phones, facilitating student intake and screening andgreeting students.

CLERICAL

Completes and maintains required documentation. Keeps accuraterecords. Reviews and verifies applications, transcripts, and otherdocuments. Maintains confidentiality of student files and other sensitive subjectmatter.  Collects and maintains student contacts for reporting purposesand analyzes and tracks data related to student progress, persistence, andsuccess.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity while meeting federalas well as internal regulations and procedures, with the ability to adapt tochanging needs of the College and business partners. Hours may include workingoutside of a normal workweek schedule as well as working in multiple Collegelocations as needed to meet workload demands. Advisors may work intermittenthours based on the operational need of the department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when enteringdata into computer. The employee regularly stands and walks and sits forextended periods of time. Employee converses verbally with others in person andby telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision whenfocusing on a computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts or exerts force ofup to 25 pounds when moving files, boxes and other materials. With multipleconference spaces as well as meetings across the campus, employee regularlywalks outside to other buildings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office and remote work environment. Regular exposure to moderatenoise typical to business offices. Must travel to various Columbus Statecampuses and sites.

and college readiness requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Guidance, or closely related field. One (1) to three (3) years progressively responsible experience in student advising. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
