Department Summary:

The College houses the following programs:

  • The UNT Honors College is dedicated to enriching the undergraduate academic experience for the more than 1,900 students who choose to be members. Undergraduate students from all UNT majors are eligible. Honors students become part of a community of scholars, with access to Honors classes and a wide array of special programming.
  • The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on Campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by University Faculty. There are no high school courses taught, but students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.
  • The Office of Undergraduate Research and Nationally Competitive Scholarships assists undergraduate and graduate students in identifying and pursuing externally funded research and study opportunities.
  • The McNair Scholars Program is a highly competitive program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to prepare university juniors and seniors who are low-income, first generation, and/or underrepresented in graduate education for doctoral education.

Position Overview:

The Honors Academic Advisor provides academic advising services for members of the college, and assists with a variety of administrative projects related to Honors retention and award completion. Specific time responsibilities:

  • 50%: Advising first-year, transfer, and continuing Honors College Students.
  • 30%: Various administrative tasks assigned by supervisor and the Associate Dean of the Honors College.
  • 20%: Professional development – College and campus committee work, professional organization membership.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively.
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Honors experience and demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Provides academic advising services for newly admitted first-year students, transfer students, and continuing students in the Honors College. Focus of advising sessions with these students groups will be developing Plans of Study to assist students in earning an Honors Award during their time at UNT.

o:

Plans and carries out all aspects and components of Honors advising, including: Scheduling appointment blocks, managing their calendar, preparing materials, conducting meetings, and completing appropriate administrative tasks for tracking student progress.

o:

Carries out various administrative responsibilities for the Honors College.

o:

Assists with planning and implementation of orientation for the Honors College.

o:

Serves on a variety of college and campus committees that will be determined in conjunction with supervisor

o:

Works with supervisor to develop a professional development plan that includes opportunities with both on-campus and off-campus professional organizations.Promotes and supports an environment that is inclusive of all members of the college and campus community

o:

Serves as retention expert for the Honors College, and will plan and implement activities that address the various strengths and needs of our student community.Stays informed of Honors programs and participates in events as appropriate.

o:

Adheres to and fosters high standards of ethical conduct, while being compliant with all applicable laws and regulations.Expected to work as a member of the Honors College office team in a professional manner to accomplish college level tasks and goals while collaborating with others to support college mission. Staff member will maintain a collegial relationship with others in the college and university, and will apply professional standards to all work carried out as a member of the college staff.
