Primary Purpose:
Oversee the office management and the activities of the Veterans Law Institute and Veterans Advocacy Clinic and to serve as the College of Law’s Student Veteran Liaison.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists Veterans Advocacy Clinic faculty, staff, and students to deliver legal services to clients, including providing direct legal representation under the supervision of an attorney to veterans in need.
  • Attends trainings, educational conferences, and stay current on federal case law to maintain proficiency in veterans’ law.
  • Provides supervision of and training to law students regarding office protocols, administrative systems, and client management.
  • Communicates with prospective and active clients, including managing and screening applications for services by the Veterans Advocacy Clinic and referring callers to other resources in the community.
  • Manages the creation and implementation of policies and procedures for the Veterans Law Institute and the Veterans Advocacy Clinic.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with community veterans’ groups by visiting with these groups, providing training, and helping with referrals of mutual clientele.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all work performed both on and off duty.
  • Supervises law students receiving, sorting and distributing mail, and answering phones at the Veterans Law Institute and assists with the completion of these activities as necessary.
  • Manages onboarding of clinical students to the Veterans Advocacy Clinic by training students on office protocol, case management systems, administrative tasks, and tracking of student hours. Assists with the direct completion of these activities as necessary.
  • Manages supplies and budget related documentation for the Veterans Law Institute and Veterans Advocacy Clinic.
  • Provides direct communication and interaction with the Veterans Law Institute Advisory Board and outreaches to the Stetson University College of Law campus.
  • Generally, coordinates activities of the Veterans Law Institute.
  • Serves as the Student Veteran Liaison (SVL). The SVL facilitates and coordinates programs and services to meet the special needs of veterans, service members, family members and survivors who are members of the College of Law community. Responsible for case file management, one-on-one advising, and coordination of services across Stetson, the VA, and community organizations.
  • As SVL, coordinates with relevant campus departments and student groups related to veterans and military service; enriches the College of Law community by assisting in the development of veteran-focused programs; assists in the application for Chapter 31 benefits (vocational rehabilitation and employment).
  • Maintains a collaborative work and learning environment for all faculty, staff members, and clinical students and works well with others.

Required Skills

B.A./B.S. degree required. At least two years’ experience in the legal field preferred. 1-3 years’ experience with veterans’ affairs required. Understanding of the area of veterans’ law required. Must be familiar with law office procedures. Working knowledge of the computer, printer, scanner, typewriter, copy machine and fax machine. Must be able to meet deadlines and maintain a consistent, dependable and regular work schedule. May work outside regular business hours, as required. Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, and to maintain positive and collaborative relationships with others. Has a collaborative work and leadership style, with a capacity to cultivate and build relationships. Should possess good written and verbal communication skills, including maturity and diplomacy. A high level of organization, flexibility, multi-tasking, judgment, interpersonal skills and follow-through are required. The ability to maintain confidentiality is a must. Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, and leadership and management abilities. The ability to juggle multiple competing priorities successfully. Excellent judgment, discretion and professionalism. Works to build an environment that promotes and facilitates the success of Diversity and Inclusive Excellence. Ability to work outside normal business hours, when needed.
