Department Description:
The Division of Infectious Diseases develops ongoing clinical, educational, and research programs directed toward the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Working in nine countries, throughout the state, and across campus, the Division’s goals include:
• Coordinating basic and applied research in infectious diseases and fostering collaboration among other investigators and researchers.
• Coordinating outreach activities with UNC-CH School of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology, and other Departments/Centers, as well as appropriate State of North Carolina agencies.
• Improving clinical care in infectious diseases, including activities related to the management of HIV and other infectious diseases; activities related to emerging pathogens, international health, and clinical outreach.
• Infectious disease prevention activities, including a focus on vaccine development and vaccination practices.

Position Description:This position will support experimental processes in the Garcia laboratory. Work requires knowledge and application of animal handling and basic laboratory techniques. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: monitoring study subjects, providing proper laboratory/study subject care, assisting with experiments, collecting, summarizing, and presenting data, processing samples harvested from test subjects, and data collection and analysis.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Must have relevant and recent experience in animal handling. Must be skilled in mouse research techniques including handling, breeding, health status monitoring, necropsy, injections, and blood collection. Must have relevant and recent experience in laboratory work including, routine laboratory care (autoclaving, stocking supplies, making common solutions). Must have the ability to clearly communicate in both written and verbal form. Must have the ability to work flexible hours if required by departmental and business needs. Must possess mobility and strength to store and access research samples, reagents, and supplies. Must have the physical ability to perform many varied tasks (i.e. fine motor skills, excellent hand-eye coordination and a high level of concentration to do technically challenging animal techniques). Must be able to work effectively as an individual and as a part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:Prefer a Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field. Prefer relevant and recent experience in blood cell isolation, tissue cell isolation, and flow cytometry. Also, prefer experience with infectious animal work. Able to analyze data digitally and manually. Proficient in or be able to learn multiple computer software platforms.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
