The Graduate Centre for Academic Communication (GCAC) within the University of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies invites applications for a full-time three-year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA), with a possible two-year renewal, specializing in teaching academic writing/speaking to graduate students. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of January 1, 2022.
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, Second-Language Pedagogy, English, or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. Applicants must also have a demonstrated record of pedagogical excellence and innovation combined with at least two years of teaching experience at the university level, evidence of effectiveness both as a sole curricular designer and instructor and as a collaborative member of a teaching team, a passion for teaching writing/speaking, and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Previous experience working with Master’s and doctoral students will be an asset.
The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled and versatile teacher with demonstrated expertise and experience in the following: 1) teaching academic writing/speaking to graduate students; 2) designing curriculum for advanced academic communication; 3) supporting multilingual students (English for Academic Purposes; 4) working with students in diverse disciplines; and 5) engagement with scholarship in Writing Studies.
Evidence of excellence in teaching, pedagogical inquiry and innovation can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
The Graduate Centre for Academic Communication is the first and largest program of its kind in Canada. Established in 2000, GCAC provides professional development in academic writing and speaking to Master’s and doctoral students in all programs at the University of Toronto (U of T). GCAC is committed to meeting the sophisticated communication needs of graduate students by providing targeted instruction and opportunities for autonomous development for both L1 and L2 speakers. Program offerings include a range of non-credit courses and workshops on topics such as grant writing, dissertation writing, oral presentation skills, and academic writing/speaking for multilingual speakers. We offer several 3-4 day intensive offerings during the year, such as dissertation and research-article boot camps, and a Writing Centre throughout the year. Approximately 7,000 of U of T’s graduate students from more than eighty graduate departments participate in GCAC’s programming annually. In addition to working with graduate students, the successful applicant will have opportunities to work with graduate faculty who provide writing/speaking support to their graduate students across all graduate departments at the university.
