Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Scintillation Materials Research Center (SMRC)

Regular, Full-time, Pay Grade 00

DescriptionThe Scintillation Materials Research Center (SMRC) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has an opening for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate. This position will focus on the discovery, synthesis, characterization, and development of new scintillation materials for radiation detection applications in homeland security and medical imaging. The individual will develop research strategies, carry out hands-on experimental research, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students. In addition, the individual will collaborate with academic, national lab, and industrial partners of the SMRC. Research results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and patented as appropriate.

The appointment is for 12 months based on satisfactory performance and available funding. An extension may be considered. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue until the position has been filled.



Qualifications
Minimum/Required Qualifications:Education:  Ph.D. in Engineering or Science.  Doctoral candidates pursuing their PhD will be required to provide an official letter from their educational institution (Graduate School) with an expected PhD completion date in order to be considered for the position. An offer of employment and start date will be contingent upon successful completion of relevant PhD.

Must be a US Citizen or permanent resident (green card holder).

Job Skills: Experience with crystal growth and characterization of scintillation and other material properties is desirable but not required. Activities will include materials synthesis and characterization, interpretation of research results, reporting to sponsors, publishing results, submitting patent applications, and mentoring students.

Physical Requirements: Able to lift 25 pounds.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:  Self-motivated researcher, strong communication skills, team oriented.
