JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and marketing career development programs and advising services to provide assistance to students in all aspects of career exploration and planning and marketing as well as building relationships with employers to support the career development of students.
- Advises and instructs students in career development, including resume and cover letter writing; interview skills; and job/internship/graduate school search strategies; networking; professionalism
- Prepares and presents career development presentations and workshops to classes, student organizations, and other student-oriented audiences
- Uses occupational information to advise students on training/educational pathways; skills; experience; average salary; and other requirements for particular careers
- Provides career assessment and interpretation to students exploring major and career options
- Manages and promotes student and employer usage of Handshake, MGA’s online job board
- Maintains ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations such as GACE (Georgia Association of Colleges & Employers) and NACE (National Association of Colleges & Employers)
- Organizes job fairs, workshops, and recruitment opportunities that will connect students to employers to provide information regarding future career options
- Works closely with other staff members in the planning, coordination, and promotion of programs such as job fairs and other employer networking activities, career development workshops, and general career advising services
- Creates surveys to assess programs; prepares, organizes and maintains reports and summaries
- Conducts regular outreach efforts to include classroom presentations, orientations, student organizations, open houses, etc
- Disseminates employment and internship opportunities to appropriate faculty, student organizations, and students, using resources such as Handshake, email, social media, etc.
- Develops strong relationships with MGA department heads and faculty; targets key faculty for employer recruitment opportunities
- Coordinates with Student Life and other Student Affairs departments to promote career development opportunities to students across all campuses
- Promotes campus recruitment opportunities to employers and graduate programs
- Promotes career development programs and services to students through various in-person and electronic communication methods (emails, social media, flyers, presentations, information tables, etc.)
- Supervise Career Center interns and student assistants
- Collaborate with other career advisors to train students assistants as paraprofessional peer career advisors
- Oversees the management, organization, and promotion of the Professional Closet and professional headshots service
- Processes registrations for career fairs and transactions for both career fairs and The Professional Closet, following procedures for invoicing, recording, and depositing related payments
- Manages career development supply and resource inventory for respective campus
- Identifies as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)
- Performs related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of career development in the context of higher education
- Knowledge of career competencies and ethical guidelines developed by the National Association of Colleges & Employers & NACE)
- Knowledge of the local, regional, and national job market
- Knowledge of state and federal employment laws
- Skill in the provision of career advisement to a diverse student body
- Skill in career management systems and other career development software programs
- Skill in decision making and problem solving
- Skill in developing relationships with employers to develop job and internship opportunities
- Skill in oral and written communication
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director of Career and Leadership Development assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department and university policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:
- The work consists of varied career development duties. The unique nature of each student’s needs contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to assist with the university’s career development programs. Success in this position provides effective career resources to students and alumni.
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other university personnel, faculty, staff, students, alumni, business leaders, potential employers, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to provide services, and to resolve issues.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The work is very active, requiring physical activity/mobility. Also requires travel to all campus locations.
- The work is performed in an office and in various campus settings including classrooms, event venues, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over student assistants and interns as assigned.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- This position is non-exempt (biweekly paid).
- Pay grade 16.
